“MGKVP creates a conducive environment for students aspiring to advance studies and provides various courses across different disciplines. Nevertheless, it faces a general shortage of lucrative job placements and extracurricular offerings.”

Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi, is regarded as a good college for those students who intend to pursue higher studies by appearing for national-level entrance examinations. As it has no strict attendance policy, students can focus on their exam preparations alongside the college academics. The professors are highly approachable and ready to clarify their doubts. 

According to the previous years’ students, the college lacks certain facilities. Since its inception in 1921, the college has undergone only specific changes, and the laboratory equipment is dated. 

The college offers various courses with different options for majors, which students can select at the time of admission. The college is recommended to students planning to pursue Science or Mathematics as their majors, research programs, or IIT JAM.

Top Courses Recommended at MGKVP

MGKVP offers many courses in various fields, ranging from Law and Humanities to Medical Sciences and Agriculture. Students who aim for research programs are provided different specializations in these fields.

As mentioned earlier, due to the lenience in attendance policy, aspirants can prepare for the competitive entrance exams while finishing their courses. The administration is more relaxed, which leads to the teachers marking present even for those students who fail to attend their classes.

Although the overall classes are mediocre, with only a few professors taking proper courses, the marking scheme followed is rigorous, with even the toppers scoring marks close to 75-80%. Hence, it is up to the students to learn for their exams and gather the study materials themselves.

• Bachelor of Science (B.Sc)
• Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Students are encouraged to join B.Sc courses at the college if they are planning to take up research in a particular Science subject. Pursuing a BA program is recommended for students who intend to get a government job.

Reasonably Priced Tuition Fees

The tuitionn fees for the programs offered by the college is affordable for students from all walks of life. The basic fees for courses in the fields of Law, Commerce, Science, and Management range from INR 6,180 for B.Lib.Sc program to INR 1,63,920 for LLM programs. Additionally, the college offers scholarship programs to those students who require financial assistance to complete their studies.

Subpar Professors

MGKVP has several highly qualified and experienced professors, yet teachers are generally lazy as the administration is more relaxed. The classes could be more interactive and engaging, and the teachers just mark the attendance of those students present, even if nothing was taken. 

It is advised that the students approach their professors and create a rapport with them to enhance their overall academic performance. They must take an active role in making use of their professors, who are knowledgeable but laid back.

Basic Amenities in a State of Disrepair

With a green and clean campus, the college infrastructure includes all the essential facilities. However, these facilities require maintenance and lack basic amenities. The labs and classrooms are underdeveloped, with outdated equipment. Some of the complaints the students have regarding the MGKVP infrastructure.

• The classrooms are large, with only four tube lights. Hence, the proper lighting makes it difficult for the students to see the blackboard, especially those with eye-sight issues.
• The laboratories are incredibly outdated, with more than half of the equipment being damaged in specific labs like that for Physics. This affects the practical learning experience of the students as they do not have the updated instruments and devices to learn the new applications.
• The library at the college is regarded as one of the worst facilities, as there is less room to accommodate the students. The resources are limited due to the unavailability of books related to the academic courses.

The administration has not made any significant changes to the infrastructure, even after the students complained about the lack of facilities. This also affects the overall performance of their students.

Economical Housing Facilities for Students

The college offers three hostels for the students with affordable rents. There are different types of rooms available at the hostels. The room rents range from INR 5000 to INR 22000 per year.  The mess in the hostels provides clean and hygienic food three times a day with additional charges. Students also have the option to stay outside the campus, as there are several hostels and PGs available around the college premises at budget-friendly prices.

Scarcity of Engaging Campus Activities

As per the feedback from the students, there is nothing much for the students to do on the campus apart from the academic activities. The main event organized in the college is the Student Union Election. The election campaigns are known to disrupt regular classes as well. Apart from this, no other events or fests are popular among the students. In general, all the students must do is gather with their friends and chit-chat.

Nonetheless, the students can find various activities and places to visit on weekends in Varanasi. There are several locations for students with different interests. The famous sites around the college that are popular among the students are as follows:

Campus Regulations and Cultural Variety

Most of the students in MGKVP are from Uttar Pradesh, and only a few students hail from other states. This makes the general population at the college less diverse. However, there is a proportional gender ratio, with an almost equal number of male and female students. 

Dress Code

There is no particular uniform for the students at the college. However, the campus is run by a conservative group, so the students are expected to follow a modest dress code.

Inadequate Placement Prospects

Most students mainly focus on pursuing their higher education or getting government jobs, so the college does not offer fruitful placement opportunities. MGKVP has no active placement cell, so fewer reputed companies are invited to the drives. Hence, the placement records are not outstanding. 

Overall, only up to 70% of the students get placement opportunities. The highest salary package offered to the students in the past years’ was at INR 5 LPA, and the average salary package was at 3 LPA. 

In terms of internships, only the local banks provide the students with internships, and most of these programs do not offer any stipends. This affects the building of an impressive resume for the students.

General Perception of MGKVP

It can be concluded that MGKVP is an excellent college for those students who wish to continue their higher education at top institutes in the country, like the IIMs. There is ample time for the students to prepare for the competitive entrance and recruitment exams the central and state government conducts. Students also have the opportunity to continue their studies abroad. The pros and cons of studying at MGKVP are as follows.
