Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, popularly known as CIMAP, is a frontier plant research laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). CSIR is a premier multidisciplinary research institute of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India with its major focus on exploiting the potential of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) by cultivation, bioprospection, chemical characterization, extraction, and formulation of bioactive phytomolecules. With a strength of 100 scientists, 162 technical officers, 129 support staff and nearly 300 doctoral and postdoctoral scholars at its HQ in Lucknow and research centers at Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pantnagar, and Purara, CSIRCIMAP has played a key role in positioning India as a global leader in production of mints, vetiver and other aromatic grasses, and in ensuring indigenous production of artemisinin - a WHO approved anti-malarial. CSIR-CIMAP houses a National Gene Bank on MAPs, which is one of the three of its kind in India. CSIR-CIMAP has played a key role in successfully commercializing an ayurvedic herbs-based anti-diabetic formulation, which has now benefitted millions. The institute is presently accredited by ICS-UNIDO and Indian-Ocean Rim Association (IORA) as a focal point for research and training on Medicinal Plants among 21 participating member countries.

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants 2024

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants was established originally as Central Indian Medicinal Plants Organisation (CIMPO) in 1959. It provides Six major courses in Agronomy, Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences, Crop Protection, Genetics & Plant Breeding and Plant Biology with various further specializations and runs four major Research Centers in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Patanagar and Purara.

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Agronomy 2024

Agronomy and Soil Science is one of the oldest divisions at CIMAP.  It started in the late seventies with multiple activities of maintaining farm, horticulture and R&D (field trials) on major medicinal and aromatic plants. The division was splitted into two departments, Agronomy & Weed Technology and Soil Science & Water Technology in 1993.

   Course                   Specialization
Agronomy  Agronomy, Soil Science

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Biotechnology 2024

The Biotechnology Division conducts R&D in four major areas like Molecular biology of plant secondary metabolism and its regulation, Plant Tissue Culture, Bio-prospecting natural resources for genes/ bioactive molecules/ products and Bioinformatics and in silico biology.

     Course                   Specialization
Biotechnology Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Bioprospection

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Chemical Sciences 2024

The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) performs the discovery, designing and value addition, scale-up process, medicinal and synthetic chemistry and quality assurances of secondary metabolites of medicinal and aromatic plants. Our works provide a basis for new and improved medicinal and aromatic plant technologies and enable understanding in interdisciplinary research. Chemical Science has three further specilazations as mentioned below:

    Course                   Specialization
Chemical Sciences Analytical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Process Chemistry & Technology

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Crop Protection 2024

Microbial Technology & Nematology, Plant Pathology are the two specilazations for Plant Crop Protection. The Microbial Technology and Nematology Department is a close-knit and dynamic department that deals with plant associated microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, AMF and nematodes especially those which are beneficial for the plants. Microorganisms benefit agriculture by cycling organic and inorganic matter into useful molecules needed by the plants. The focus of the Plant Pathology department is investigations on the outbreak of new and important diseases caused by fungal, bacterial, viral, phytoplasma and ergot production.

    Course                   Specialization
Plants Crop Protection  Microbial Technology & Nematology, Plant Pathology

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Genetics & Plant Breeding 2024

With the establishment of the Division of Genetics and Plant Breeding in 1978 systematic efforts were initiated on genetic improvement of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) as its core mandate activity. Application of recombination, Cloline, Mutation, polyploidy and Molecular Approaches for Qualitative and Quantitative Breeding of MAPs. Utilization of Biometrical, Population and Association Genetics to realize Genetic Improvement of MAPs. General and Molecular Cytogenetics, DNA marker resources and Molecular phylogenetics.

    Course                   Specialization
Plants Genetics & Plant Breeding  Genetic Resource Management, Plant Breeding

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Plant Biology 2024

Plant Biology consists of two Departments, Botany & Pharmacogonosy and Metabolic and Structural Biology. Research activities of Botany & Pharmacogonosy are aimed at survey, collection and authentication of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) from different phyto-geographical regions of the country.Research activities at the department of  Metabolic and Structural Biology are primarily aimed at the delineating and mechanistically describing the plant secondary metabolites related biosynthetic pathways and their steps, through structural and functional characterization of the relevant genes/ proteins/ metabolites involved on important MAPs as Withania somnifera, Centella asiatica, Neem, mint and Ocimum.
