As many as 745 inmates from the Nagpur and Amravati Jails have applied for various courses at IGNOU since 2010. Recently, three prisoners of the Nagpur jail completed their degrees from IGNOU.
Narayan Choudary, who is a death row convict, completed the MA degree from the university. Vijay Mahakalkar and Shyamrao Waghmare completed BA who are serving life sentences completed the BA degree. They couldn't attend the convocation ceremony held at the university this month due to the protocol but they will be awarded their degrees in a ceremony that will be held in the jail premises.
Prisoners Get Study Material Just like Other Students
The inmates who have applied for the various courses get the same study material as other students of the university. Prisoners are trained in traditional skills such as carpentry and fabrication, among other skills. The authorities of the jail have launched different programs to impart various skills to the inmates.
IGNOU has also collaborated with Hero Motors Corps to provide mechanical training to the inmates. It will be a 2-month long course for the inmates.
A company named Sai Minda has also set up a facility in the jail premises to manufacture wiring harnesses.
The jail authorities have stated that the inmates take a large amount of interest in these skill development activities as it will help them get jobs once they get released after they complete their sentences.
