SRM institute attained the deemed status during the 2003/2004 academic year and was renamed as SRM Institute of Science and Technology. The university was again renamed as SRM University in 2006. This was when it attained the status of a full-fledged university, under the section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.

The Amaravati campus of SRM is aligned to be open by July 2017. Amaravati has tied up with many multinational institutions. It was inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Minister of India - Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu. The university is set to become first integrated inter disciplinary institutions offering various courses in Engineering, Management, law, medical sciences, pure sciences and liberal arts. SRM University, AP – Amaravati, in association with the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh is aiming to launch an incubation center - “SHRISTI” which basically is the SRM Habitat for Research & Innovation in Science & Technology for Industries in order to align its university into a hub of innovation of development.
SHRISTI aims to create 100 companies and generate 10,000 jobs in next 10 years. This innovation center will provide customized build-up space and research infrastructure with supporting services.

Today SRM University counselling began where we have called 10,000 SRMJEEE rank holders. Nearly 3178 students expressed interest in applying for SRM Amaravati campus, which is a considerably new campus of SRM. During the first day of Cycle 1 admissions, 10 toppers of SRM JEEE including the 51st rank holder has opted for Amaravati.
SRMJEE - The campus gave 100 % scholarship for rank holders from 1 to 100.
