Shivani Devi, a PhD pupil from the Faculty of Science at Shoolini University, has made a groundbreaking discovery in the field of arachnology. Working under the guidance of Prof JM Julka, who has over five decades of exploration experience, Shivani linked a new rubric and species of ‘harvestmen’. This distinct group is frequently incorrect for spiders in the Indian Himalayan region. Hailing from Una in Himachal Pradesh, Shivani got exploration support from the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The discovery of this new rubric and species of ‘harvestmen ’ proves the biodiversity in the region and highlights the eventuality of further scientific disquisition. These findings affect from a larger design, ‘ Returning Taxus to the Timbers and the People A Study in Shimla and Kullu sections of the Indian Himalayan Region’, funded by the NMHS. This design aimed to probe the pets and soil fauna associated with Taxus Contorta, a risked tree species in the region.
The exploration conducted by Shivani and Prof Julka highlights the rich and different ecosystem of the Himalayas, which remains largely unexplored. The study area included the townlets of Himri and Nankhari in the Shimla quarter, where pitfall traps were used to collect arthropods. These traps, conforming to plastic mugs buried in the soil and filled with a cleaner result, were left out for 24 hours to capture samples.
The suspected oneness of the recently discovered ‘ harvestmen ’ species was verified through analysis by Jochen Martens, a German zoologist. His examination validated that the instance represented a new rubric and species of harvestmen from the temperate Himalayas. This significant discovery has been named ‘ Himachalus Pradeshicus ’ in honor of Himachal Pradesh, where it was discovered.
The findings of this exploration have been published in a famed Swiss journal, contributing significantly to our understanding of the biodiversity of the Himalayan region. Shivani Devi expressed excitement about the discovery, saying, “Tapping into the vast biodiversity of the Himalayas to discover ‘Himachalus Pradeshicus ’ has been thrilling.
