 About UNU-ISP Scholarship | For Ph.D at Tokyo

UNU-ISP Scholarship is for admission into Master of Science and Ph.D. at Tokyo. It is an international academic institute chartered by the United Nations. The UNU-ISP scholarship is conducted by United Nations University for Sustainability and Peace. UNU-ISP Scholarship 2018 is inviting application for September 2018. The scholarships are provided to students who can demonstrate the need for finance. There is no separate application fee for the scholarship as such.


The candidate needs to fulfill the following criteria for the admission process:

  • The candidate should have a strong interest in Sustainability Studies - A completed Master’s degree in disciplines related to sustainability studies and a minimum of 2 years of practical field experience related to UNU-ISP research themes in a responsible capacity, (or)
  • Two completed Master's degrees, at least one of which must be in disciplines related to sustainability studies.
  • A GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale on at least one of the Master's degrees earned the English language proficiency.

The minimum score requirements for English language qualifications required by UNU-ISP are:

  • 600 in TOEFL - Paper-Based Testing (PBT) - 100 in TOEFL - Internet-Based Testing (IBT)
  • 7.0 in IELTS - Academic format - There is no age limit for applying, provided the candidate satisfies all other eligibility criteria.
  • There is no requirement for students to speak in Japanese and neither do they have to submit the Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate.
 Reward Description

UNU-ISP Scholarship 2018 Reward The University offers full time and part time scholarships for students applying for the Ph.D. programme. A full-time scholarship is very competitive and covers the following things:

  • Tuition Fees: The scholarship covers the full tuition fees. 
  • Monthly Allowance: Provides a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 36 months.
  • Travel Allowance: Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student.

This is to be noted that 120,000 JPY is the average monthly living cost for an international student without dependents in Tokyo, although this amount may vary depending on the lifestyle of the student. 

 Application Process

UNU-ISP Scholarship Application Process: The candidates have to apply for the UNU-ISP Ph.D. Programme and they do not have to fill a separate application form for the scholarship. The candidates have to apply for the UNU-ISP Ph.D. programme only online. There is no offline application process. There is no application Processing Fee Online Application

  • Create a User Account.
  • You will need to create a user account to submit your applications.
  • The online form can be saved and returned to at any time before submitting.
 Selection Process

Selection Process for UNU-ISP Scholarship:

  • The application reviewing process and decision making about the scholarship takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks. The candidates who have been selected for UNU ISP Ph.D. Programme will be notified via e-mail.
  • Necessary documents for the admission procedure will be sent together with a letter of acceptance. Successful applicants must submit a medical certificate.
  • The matriculation date (early September 2018) cannot be extended, regardless of any special circumstances on the part of the student.

The unsuccessful applicants will be notified by e-mail to the address provided on Application Form. Admissions Office does not provide individual feedback on unsuccessful applications. An e-mail will be the primary method of contact.
