 About UGC Scholarship | Post Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holders

The University Grants Commission [UGC], introduced a Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship Scheme for University rank holders both in General and Honours Courses at Undergraduate level because of the need to emerge as a powerful nation and bring Post-graduation into the light of talented students by offering them good incentives in the form of Scholarships.

The University Grants Commission aims:

  • To nurture and promote talent
  • To reward merit students for their excellence in Under-graduation
  • To promote study in basic subjects both General as well as Honours at the undergraduate level. The scheme does not apply for professional courses.
  • To improve academic excellence at postgraduate level across the colleges and universities in the country.

The Scholarship may be credible for a span of two years to support the rank holders of each university at the undergraduate level to pursue their Master’s Degree.

  • All universities would be required to issue rank certificates to the toppers of the university.
  • Online applications are accepted by University Grant Commission for Post Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holders.
  • UGC Scholarship for University Rank Holders is offered by UGC with the help of Ministry of Human Resource and Development for the 1st and 2nd rank holders in the university to carry on their post-graduation studies.
  • University Grants Commission has been granting scholarships for educational purposes to the students under different heads but for promoting higher education in the country.
  • UGC Scholarship for University Rank Holders is given to those students who want to pursue post-graduation studies in non-professional courses and have studied any of the following subjects:
    • Life Sciences
    • Physical Sciences
    • Chemical Sciences
    • Earth Sciences
    • Mathematical Sciences
    • Social Sciences
    • Commerce
    • Languages
 Details

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The student must have achieved 1st or 2nd rank in the university for General course and 1st rank in the university for Honours course in undergraduate level with a minimum of 60% marks.
  • The student must have taken admission in a regular non-professional post-graduate course.
  • The student must have studied at an affiliated university where at least 1000 students have appeared in the undergraduate examination for General course and 100 students have appeared for Honours course.
  • The student should not be more than 30 years of age.
  • The scholarship is available to the student for first PG Degree only.
  • Degrees awarded by an autonomous college is not valid but should be included in the affiliating university and a common ranking is to be provided.
  • Students pursuing a degree course through distance learning or open university are not eligible.
 Reward Description

UGC Scholarship for University Rank Holders Rewards: 

  • Number of Scholarships
    • Scholarships awarded in the first academic year would be 1800 per year for General Courses and 575 for Honours Courses. The duration of the scholarship is for two years.
  • Amount of Scholarship
    • The financial support for the scheme will be provided by the UGC to all the eligible universities/institutions which are under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act.
    • Scholarship of Rs. 2000 per month will be granted for a period of 2 years.
    • In an academic year, the scholarship would be paid for 10 months i.e. 20 months in 2 years.
    • No other additional grants will be payable such as hostel charges and medical charges etc. and no extension is permitted beyond two years.
    • The student who is awarded the UGC Post-graduate Scholarship will not be stopped from accepting any other scholarship.
 Application Process

UGC Scholarship for Rank Holders

UGC Scholarship for University Rank Holders Application Process: 

  • In the personal information column students have to fill in their personal information, contact information, and rank achieved in the under-graduation examination. In the same section, students need to upload their scanned rank certificate.
  • In the qualification and declaration column, the student has to upload scanned under-graduate course mark sheet and joining report of post-graduation course.
  • After filling all the columns, students can edit the form in case any error occurs and then take the print out of the online submitted application form. Students have to only fill the online application form and need not to submit a hard copy of any document.
  • Documents to be submitted:
    • The candidate is required to submit an application in the prescribed format.
    • Attested copy of university undergraduate-degree.
    • Matriculation certificate.
    • A verification certificate by the institute where the student has taken admission to 1st Year Post-Graduation Course.
    • Prescribed format of Provisional Rank Certificate from the University.
  • Every year University/Institution should submit a verified statement for the following:
    • A statement giving the names of the students selected for the scholarship along with their receipt of scholarship amount.
    • Progress Report to be submitted after the first year of the award-giving containing the percentage of marks obtained by the candidates.
    • Utilization certificate.
 Selection Process

UGC Scholarship for University Rank Holders Selection Process: 

  • The selection of the candidates will be done on the basis of merit list prepared.
  • The scholarship will be disclosed through the institution where the awardee has taken admission for their post-graduation studies.
  • Scholarships can be canceled in case of:
    • Misconduct of the awardee, if any, reported by the University/Institution.
    • Unsatisfactory progress report which means if the candidate scores less than 60% marks in the first year of the Master’s programme.
    • Candidates being found ineligible at a later date shall face the penal action and will also be liable to refund the entire Scholarship amount paid.  
    • Any student who discontinues studies without prior approval of the UGC will have to refund the whole amount and the concerned institution will be responsible for this.
