Teach for India Fellowship was initiated in 2009 by Shaheen of Akanksha Foundation. She felt the need to address the issue of educational inequity on a bigger scale.

In the Fellowship program, they provide an opportunity to talented and most assuring individuals coming from India's best universities and workplaces, to serve as full-time teachers to children from low-income communities in some of the most under-resourced schools.

It is a 2-year program which provides an opportunity for promising young people to develop leadership qualities and simultaneously transform the lives of the children under their vision. Through their experience of teaching in classrooms and working with key education stakeholders like students, principals, and parents, Fellows get exposed to the realities of India’s education system and inculcate the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to attain positions of leadership in the education system.

The Fellows strive for the following three commitments:

  • The commitment to personal transformation
  • The commitment to collective action
  • The commitment to educational equity

At present Teach for India program is working in 7 cities which include Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad & Bengaluru. Teach for India Fellows will be placed in low-income schools in the selected cities and will be assigned to teach students who belong to schools having fewer resources. Fellows will be provided with the necessary support to carry out their function properly.
