Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship is offered by the University of Waikato, New Zealand to provide support for students who excel in either a chosen sporting code or a creative and performing art to achieve a high academic standard in a programme of study. It was initiated in 2005 with due respect to the great adventurer Sir Edmund Hillary.
The scholarship aims to build inspiring excellence, all-round development, and leadership in the students receiving the awards.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded for studying any of the courses under the above-given course level offered by the University of Waikato.
Support for professional developmentopportunities and fees support are provided for Scholars.
Duration of award: The Scholarship is awarded for the entire course duration.
Over 150-200 Scholarship awards are provided every year for any course offered at the University of Waikato, New Zealand.
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:
The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship is open to both New Zealand citizens and international students.
The students should have excelled academically and in sports or creative performing arts.
The student should have received admission to study at the University of Waikato at either the Hamilton or Tauranga campus.
The student should be a school leaver and be able to present leadership potential.
Candidates who have not previously been enrolled at the University of Waikato or any other tertiary institution must have:
Achieved an NCEA Level 3 Certificate with Merit or Excellence and University Entrance. [OR]
Achieved by other means, such as the Cambridge International Examinations or the International Baccalaureate examination, a standard of academic achievement deemed by the University to be equivalent.
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Rewards:
Financial Support: $10,000 per year for full-time undergraduate enrollment.
Personalized academic support with mentorship.
Leading coaches/tutors in the area of sports/arts with well-equipped facilities.
Training to possess leadership skills and personal development.
Additional support for living expenses.
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Application Process:
Candidates have to fill in the Online Application Form available at the official website before the due date: 31st August.

The personal statement that briefly presents the following:
Best performance to date and why
Future aspirations for creative or sporting endeavors
Leadership & community involvement
A reference from a person or an agency relevant to the sporting code, performing art or creative art concerned, attesting to the applicant’s abilities in that sport or art, the potential to further excel, and leadership qualities as a second reference.
A completed Principal’s assessment form.
An up-to-date copy of their NZQA School Results Summary.
Gap year applicants only are required to provide an additional one-page statement outlining the details of what they accomplished in the year between secondary and tertiary study.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Selection Process:
The candidates will be selected by a Selection Panel headed by the Head of Student and Academic Services and up to six other members will be appointed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in consultation with the Head of Student and Academic Services and the Chair of the Scholarships Committee.

Significant achievement to date and potential to further excel in either
A sporting code
A performing or creative art
Candidate’s willingness and ability to fully participate in, and contribute to, the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme
The Selection Panel’s decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into following the selection meeting.
Successful applicants will be intimated about the offer of Scholarship through E-mail and they have to revert back to the University’s Scholarships Office of their acceptance of the offer by the prescribed date.
