Max Weber Fellowships Contact Details

Max Weber Fellowships is being offered by European University Institute to the candidates willing to go for academic research after their Ph.D. The  Max Weber Fellowships is open to eligible applicants who are within 5 years from the completion of their Ph.D., from anywhere in the world, regardless of nationality and including non-EU citizens.

The applicants can undertake postdoctoral research in any of the following subjects:

  • Political and Social Sciences
  • Economics
  • Law
  • History  

The applications for Max Weber Fellowships 2018 will be accepted online and the last date to complete the online application form is October 25, 2018. The Max Weber Fellowships receives 1200 applicants every year in the fields of political and social sciences, economics, law, and history, and offers 55-60 Fellowships.

Fellows are trained and given support in all aspects of an academic career from publishing and presenting, teaching, applying for research grants and jobs, etc. Most Max Weber Fellows are given an academic position in the best institutions around the world upon completion of the Programme. 

The Programme awards 1, 2, and exceptionally 3-year long fellowships depending upon the departments.


Max Weber Fellowship

Max Weber Fellowships Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: The applications are open for individuals of all nationalities.
  • Academic Qualification: The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree obtained within the past 5 years or have official approval to defend their thesis by the time the programme begins (1 September). 
  • Additional Support: Extension for five years is allowed for applicants whose academics have been paused for maternity or paternity leave, illness or mandatory military service. 
  • Language requirements: The applicant should possess excellent written as well as oral skills in the English language. Some of the test scores expected are mentioned below:
    • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): C1
    • IELTS score: 7.5 Bands
    • TOEFL: 110
    • Cambridge Proficiency: A/B/C
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): A/B
  • Note: EUI graduates can only apply for a Max Weber Fellowships leaving from the EUI and in a full-time occupation or another fellowship for at least a year after defending their Ph.D.
 Reward Description

Max Weber Fellowships Rewards:

The fellows selected for the Max Weber Fellowships will be provided with a monthly grant. The details regarding the benefits of the scholarship are as follows:

  • Duration of the Fellowship: 
    • 12 months for all applicants of the Department of History and Civilization (HEC) and Law (LAW)
    • 12 or 24 months for applicants of the Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) or the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS). 
    • 24 months or exceptionally 36 months for Department of Economics [ECO] applicants.  
  • Residence: Fellows are required to live in Florence for the duration of their Fellowship to participate actively in the programme and in the academic activities of their department. 
  • Monthly Grant: The applicant will get a monthly grant of 2000 Euros (Approx. 1.5 lakh INR) which will be clubbed with a Family allowance of 300 Euros (Approx. 20,000 INR) if the fellow lives with a partner.
  • Travel Expenses: Only the fellow selected for the fellowship will get reimbursement of one round-trip economy class airfare from his/her home country to Florence. The upper limit of reimbursement is 1200 Euro (Approx. 90,000 INR.)
  • Medical Insurance: Candidates must have medical insurance coverage or can subscribe to the medical insurance plan offered by EUI at their own expense.
  • Research Expenses: All Fellows receive 1000 EUR per year for eligible research expenses, such as attendance at conferences. 

Note: There is no provision for removal or installation expenses and the Fellowship is not taxed by the Institute.

 Application Process

Max Weber Fellowships Application Process:

The application process for the Max Weber Fellowship takes place in 2 phases:

  1. Register your application as early as possible through Online Application Form by inserting your personal details and referee details.
  2. Submit your application by the deadline 18th October. The deadline is an exception for the Department of Economics [ECO] which accepts late applications until all positions are filled.  

Documents Required:

  • The candidates should upload the following documents in PDF format while making application for the Max Weber Fellowship:
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV): The candidate should upload their most recent and updated curriculum vitae.
    • Academic Career Statement: A 2-page statement including details of research and teaching interests and experience, and career plans.
    • Research Proposal: The research proposal should state well-defined and realistic goals that can be achieved within the duration of the fellowship. The candidate also needs to indicate that whether his/her work can fit within any of the following six thematic research groups:
      • Citizenship and Migration
      • Europe in the World
      • Experimental Methods in Social Sciences
      • Ideas, Concepts, and Theory
      • Governance, Constitutionalism, and Democracy
      • Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa: Assessing the Fiscal and Monetary Framework of the EU
    • Letter of Reference: The applicant should provide contact details of at least 2 or at most 3 academic referees and should make sure that the references are submitted before October 18
      • References will not be accepted after the deadline. 
      • References from present full-time or part-time EUI professors will not be accepted.

Note: Candidates being funded from an external source are allowed to apply and will be selected according to the same criteria and procedures. They can apply for an externally funded fellowship by the 25th of March.

 Selection Process

Max Weber Fellowships Selection Process:

Candidates are reviewed by the Director of the MWP and the professors of the relevant Department/the RSCAS, and selected by the Max Weber Steering Committee according to the following three selection criteria:

  • Academic Accomplishments and Potential: The contribution of the applicant will be assessed by publications, Ph.D. thesis, etc. as outlined in the CV. Their plans and commitments as described in Research Proposal and Academic career statement. Preference will be given to candidates who are in the early stage of their Post-doctoral career.
  • Research Proposal: The research proposal should clearly mention the well-defined and realistic goals which can be achieved during the interval of the Fellowship.
  • Mentorship: The capacity and availability of EUI faculty, be it in the departments or the RSCAS, to provide mentorship is taken into account.

Final approval is made by the Executive Committee of the EUI. Their decision is final and no appeal is possible.
