In an attempt to provide a leg up to scientific research and pioneering engineering ideas in the country, the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has instituted the J.C. Bose National Fellowship, a Fellowship scheme named after one of the most brilliant scientists of India, Shri Jagdish Chandra Bose.
The scholarship is aimed to identify and promote active scientists and engineers who have exemplary performance records and the desire to continue with research in India.
All areas of science and engineering are covered under this program. Nominations are invited each year by the government to identify the best minds in the country.
The JC Bose fellowship is awarded to active scientists in recognition for their outstanding performance. The fellowship is scientist-specific and very selective.
JC Bose National Fellowship Eligibility Criteria:
The student should be an Indian national, residing in the country.
Age limit: 68 years is the maximum age limit to pursue the Fellowship.
Degree: Higher degree or equivalent, which is either a master’s degree/ Ph.D./ MD in the fields of science/ engineering/ medicine, with substantial work experience in the field of their study.
The candidate should be an active scientist with a record of outstanding performance apparent from the award of SS Bhatnagar prize and or fellowship of science academies.
Research publication and proven record of such recognition should be provided by the candidate.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a research program at a recognized university/institute/organization on a full-time basis.
If the candidate is currently on any other scholarship, then they will have to opt out of one of the two scholarships.
JC Bose National Fellowship Rewards:
The fellowship will be at a value of Rs. 25,000 each month, apart from the regular research income.
An additional grant of Rs. 15 lakh each year for research will be provided to attend conferences and handle other research-related expenses.
An overhead cost of Rs. 1.00 lakh per annum is provided to the host institute.
Duration: The fellowship is initially for 5 years which can be extended based on exceptional performance.
The fellowship can be held up to 68 years of age only.
JC Bose National Fellowship Application Process:
The Application Process is done by the nomination process.
The nominations for the Fellowship can be sent by the Heads of the Institutions, JC Bose Fellows and Presidents of National science academies.
The nominations are received throughout the year through online mode: www.serbonline.in
There is no last date for nominating candidates for the Fellowship.
JC Bose National Fellowship Selection Process:
SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board) will be open for submissions of appropriate recommendations and nominations from the institutes throughout the year.
The selection of the candidates is done periodically by a search-cum-selection committee as per the guidelines of the board.
Institutions that offer the Fellowship through successful mechanisms will carry out scrutinizing of nominations and their recommendations.
