  • The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are considered as one of the most high-status international scholarships in the world.  
  • In the year 2000 Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme was launched when Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated US$210M to the University of Cambridge. Till date, it is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.
  • Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.
  • 90 new Scholarships awarded each year in which 40 are offered to the US and 50 International candidates.
  • Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.
  • The present Alumni are pursuing further study or employment across many sectors of society.
  • The requirements for being selected is, the candidate should possess the following criteria:
    • Outstanding intellectual ability
    • Leadership potential
    • A commitment to improving the lives of others
    • A good fit between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate programme at Cambridge for which they are applying
  • The Gates Cambridge programme aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: People of all Nationalities except the United Kingdom are eligible.
  • Candidates applying to pursue any one of the three below mentioned residential courses at the University of Cambridge:
    • Ph.D. (3-year research-only degree)
    • Master of Science or Master of Letters (2-year research-only degree)
    • One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, Diploma, MBA etc.)
  • Current students at Cambridge if applying for a new postgraduate course are also eligible to apply.
  • Courses which are NOT eligible for Gates Cambridge Scholarships:
    • BA (undergraduate)
    • BA affiliated (a second BA)
    • MBBChir Clinical Studies
    • MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
    • Part-time degrees
    • Non-degree courses
    • Courses at universities other than Cambridge 
 Reward Description

Gates Cambridge Scholarship Rewards:

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most generous international scholarships available. It covers the following costs:

Core Components:

  • University Composition Fee: Candidates have to pay the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate
  • Maintenance allowance: Maintenance allowance offered for a single student is £17,500 for 12 months.
  • Travel allowance: One economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course.
  • Inbound Visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Discretionary Components:

  • The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:
    • Academic development funding - from £500 to £2,000, dependent on the length of the course, to attend conferences and courses.
    • Family allowance - up to £10,120 for the first child and up to £4,320 for the second child. No funding is provided for the partner.
    • Fieldwork - the Candidate may apply to keep up to his/her normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of the Ph.D.
    • Hardship funding - for unexpected difficulties
    • Maternity/Paternity funding - the Candidate may apply to intermit his/her studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive the maintenance allowance during this time.
    • Some fourth year funding for Ph.D. Scholars may be provided.
 Application Process

Gates Cambridge Scholarship Application Process:

  • Gates Cambridge runs two-round application process every year, the candidate should ensure to apply by the relevant deadline.
  • For US Citizens the last date falls in October 2018.
  • For International Students the last date to apply falls in December 2018

Other details:

  • Candidates can apply on a single form for admission to a course and a College and for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship
  • It is not possible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship without applying to the University of Cambridge
  • Candidates can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to their chosen postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge and a Cambridge College via the Graduate Admissions Office, using the GRADSAF form and supporting documents

Steps involved in the application process:

  • Step 1: Registration
  • Step 2: Application Fee Payment of £50 which has to be done online

Important Points

  • The online form must be submitted by the relevant closing date. 
  • After you have submitted your online application you will be given access to the online self-service account, via which you can submit the required supporting documentation.
  • These must be provided within 14 days of submitting your application, or your application will not be considered.


  • The duly filled in Application form along with the above-mentioned enclosures have to be submitted at the Graduate Admissions Office by the relevant deadline.

Gates Cambridge uses a three-stage selection process to ensure Scholars meet all of the mentioned criteria to the highest degree.

  • Stage 1: Departmental Ranking
  • Stage 2: Shortlisting
  • Stage 3: Interview
    • The interview has 4 main sections:
      • Introduction of the Candidate
      • About Gates Cambridge
      • Academic and Career plans
      • Final thoughts and questions if any

Once a candidate clears all these rounds, they will be informed through mail.
