Placements and Internships

3.5

The course provides for internships (very limited) in the second year, during the summer break. There is a placement cell devoted to specifically training students and managing campus placements. Though there is no 100% placement rate, high-end companies like Goldman Sachs, Ernst &Young (Global and India) etc as well as known NGO's like Teach For India do come and a reasonable number of students are hired, through a strenuous process. It definitely depends on the individuals competency and determination. I personally think the opportunities are available if you want to make use of.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

4

There is an on-campus hostel for both, PUC and Degree students, for those looking for boarding. If not, there are a number of decent PG's around the area, close to the college.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

I am an alumnus of Jyoti Nivas College (Autonomous), Bangalore, of the batch of 2016, B.COM (major in Finance). I graduated with reasonably good grades, even better memories and the best of friends. There is no entrance exam needed to enrol for the course; sufficient score in 12th grade/2nd puc, from any curriculum, will suffice. Most admissions were walk-in after the results of state board were announced and there was no interview either. Most other colleges that I was looking at had high cut offs (above 90-94%), but not JNC.

Academics and Faculty

4.5

The teaching staff is very good (except for one or two subjects here and there over the period of 3 years). The methodology of teaching is not exclusive as such, the same old school way of teaching but it works well with us so there is no complaining. Though I'd have to make a special mention of my Finance teacher (who taught us the subject as a major in third year) who had exemplary skills of explanation. Apart from the teaching, the ambience is very good, especially location-wise considering the proximity to a number of food joints, hang out areas for students etc. The canteen (2-3 at that time) had a reasonably good variety and kept us from wanting to go out to eat very often. (best momos!)
The library, one of my personal favourite places in the entire college had a diverse collection of books, education and otherwise (fiction and non-fiction).

Fees and Scholarships

3.5

There are a number of scholarships available, but you will have to contact the college administration department to find out about the ongoing availability of the same.

Clubs and Associations

4

Those interested in sports also have good opportunities to explore (note - yearly inter-college sports fest - sphygmus). I was a part of the Rotaract Club of Jnc for all 3 years, becoming the president eventually, therefore i must say that JNC gave me a wonderful opportunity in the form of that, one that i'd be thankful to for life. There are also other clubs and associations such as NCC, commerce club, etc, and there are dedicated inter and intra college fests to each stream as well. The main festival though, being the yearly, 'Scintillation', which is conducted on a huge scale over a period of 3 days, ending the 3rd evening with a lantern night, scintillating the night sky with colourful lanterns (my favourite part!).
The college also has timely conferences on specialized topics, wherein highly qualified panel of speakers are called, and the opportunity to learn furthermore is given to students of all streams. To summarize, Jyoti Nivas College may not be the best-rated college in the city, but considering all its facets, I wouldn't go back and chose any other college. Here's to always letting my light shine, and hoping this review will guide you to let yours shine too!
