• Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) was established in December 2005 as one of the Centres of Excellence.
• The faculty of the Centre, drawn from different departments, is involved in developing state-of-the-art facilities at the institute and is vigorously pursuing interdisciplinary research on various current aspects of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

• Carbon Nanotubes and its applications: Li-ion battery, Field emission, Gas sensor

• Modelling & Simulation

• Nanobiotechnology

• Nanocomposites & their coatings

• Nanosurface Engineering

• Photochemistry & Photophysics of Nanomaterials

• Synthesis of Nanowires/Nanocolloids/QuantumDots

• Thin Films & Nanostructures

• Each academic year is divided into two semesters and teaching programs are organized around the credit system.
•  Teaching includes lectures, tutorials, practicals, projects, seminars, dissertations, and field & industrial training
• . The Institute lays special emphasis on the tutorial system, which is based on a close personal interaction between students and teachers. 
• The undergraduate students have to undergo a comprehensive project during the final year of their studies.
•  A distinct feature of the education system at IIT Roorkee is the emphasis on overall personality development and instilling in students the qualities of leadership . Thus, extracurricular activities are an important part of student life.

• The Institute offers a merit-cum-means scholarship to 25% of undergraduate students. 
• Several other scholarships are announced from time to time. 
• Bank loans are also easily available whenever required.
•  Financial help is provided as Institute free studentship and scholarships to undergraduate students belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
• Students admitted to the 2-year M.Sc. degree in sciences are also awarded merit-cum-means scholarships.
•  A number of scholarships, teaching/research assistantship schemes provide financial support to students of M.Tech. and Ph.D. programs. 
• Sponsored (full-time as well as part-time), self-financing foreign students and M.B.A. students are, however, not eligible for benefits of this scheme. Students are encouraged to earn while they learn.
• Prizes and certificates are given to students on the basis of their performance in curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

• The competitive academic environment and co-curricular activities on campus keep the students on their toes.  
• The students' clubs: the Hobbies club, the U.G. club, the P.G. club, the Alaknanda club and the Jawahar clubhouse the indoor sports facilities including seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table. 
• The hobbies club also has sections devoted to pursuits like star-gazing, philately and numismatics, and robotics. 
• The clubs also have reading rooms with a plethora of newspapers and light magazines. 
• Each of the clubs has a TV room with a seating capacity of a hundred-odd people providing a great atmosphere for watching the winning sixer or the not-so-interesting soap operas.
