Placements and Internships

1.5

  • The FRI has bragged about securing placements for 50% of the candidates from Forestry background but most of the candidates here enroll themselves in the preparations for competitive exams like Agriculture officer, UPSC, State forest Services, CDS, etc. or in the field of Research programs Ph.D. or Lecturership.
  • The Alumni network is moderate and Alumni can be approached through networks but serves the purpose very poorly.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

3.5

  • There is one hostel for Boys which accommodates around 100 students and 2 hostels for Girls. The Hospitality extended by lower staff is commendable and the warden is also approachable.
  • PG's are available at reasonable rates around the college but is not needed as the college is more than sufficient to meet the requirements of accommodation of all the students.
  • The college hostels have their respective mess being run by student co-operatives and hence can be controlled by students by all means in terms of Quality and hygiene etc. Apart from these, there are 3 canteens in the campus.
  • The Labs lack proper facilities, the wifi has restrictions.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

  • The Forest Research Institute is one of the most premier Institutes in the field of Forestry in India since 1906 and awards four Master's Degree programs and Ph.D. programs. I have enrolled myself in the Master's program in Forestry currently.
  • To get into one of its Master Degree programs you have to qualify the entrance exams conducted by the Institute only. The eligibility criteria being graduation (in any field) from a recognized University and do not require any background in the field of forestry.
  • A combined merit list is announced for all the M.sc courses and candidates are called for counseling accordingly. In case of vacant seat candidates from waiting lists are also called.
  • The syllabus for the Entrance examination is very general.
  • Science and logic based questions and can be tackled easily if you are updated with day to day events and with a moderately strong base in subjects like science and mathematics.
  • The Examination is conducted for 800 marks in total with a cut off percentage of 50% but might differ on the basis of the highest marks secured.

Academics and Faculty

2.5

  • The Academic year at FRI for (2016-18) started in the mid of the July and the classes are held in 2 batches, ie. pre lunch and post lunch classes. The pre-Lunch classes are scheduled from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and consist of theory classes and post Lunch classes are scheduled from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm and are meant for Practical classes after the first month of the academic year.
  • The courses are taught by Scientists whose work coincides with the courses being taught hence giving an excellent exposure to the students. The teaching methods generally include seminar sessions which make the use of Powerpoint presentations, which might become monotonous at times and requires more practical approach towards the subjects taught.
  • The Forest Research Institute provides you with an excellent opportunity with respect to one of the most treasured and oldest Library in the campus and various Scientists working on their Research Projects in various Departments but you have to follow an unnecessary protocol to approach them.
  • The institute lacks proper high-tech research facility.

Fees and Scholarships

2.5

  • The course fees for M.Sc. Forestry at FRI is around Rs.30,000 per semester i.e. quarterly and extends up to Rs.60,000 per annum for all categories.
  • The Institute awards scholarships worth Rs.11,000 to the students who have secured highest marks in Entrance examination during the first semester and to the students who have topped their semester exams in General category and SC/ST combined category separately.
  • Only 1 student from each category gets the scholarship which totals up to 2 students per course.

Clubs and Associations

3.5

  • There are few clubs like a Nature Club known as NISARG which carries out a lot of activities and tries to widen its area of operation.
  • Apart from that, there is a Drama Society known as AAFRIN.
