Placements and Internships

2.5

  • IBS, Hyderabad does have companies coming in for the Summer Internship Program, which lies in between the 2 years of your MBA, during the summer break after the first year precisely. It's a 3-month internship but the companies that come in hardly offer you any stipend (around 5000 INR average) while some of them do not even offer any stipend. A few exceptional cases in my year are JPMC (that's if you're planning to opt for Finance) which offers you a stipend of 35000 INR per month and some banks (again in the Finance segment) like HDFC which offer 15-20k per month. The stipends offered for the marketing students are not all that much. You can imagine the plight of the HR and Operations' students by this.

Speaking about placements, a lot of successful start-ups, as well as well established companies of the country, come to the campus with an average salary offering of 6 Lakhs per annum (CTC). However, this would make you rethink your decision, considering the ROI due to the hefty amount of 16 Lakhs that you pay to the business school for the 2 years of your MBA. (in comparison to all other successful business schools which 1. do not take in as much as 1200 students, so the 2. Average placements are automatically higher and 3. the overall fees are much lesser than IBS, Hyderabad.)

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

4.5

  • The college infrastructure is impressive. It is a 92 acres campus.

  • The entire campus stands an hour away from the main city of Hyderabad.Being situated on the extreme outskirts of the city, the campus is surrounded by lush green fields and has a lot of trees in the campus itself which makes the temperature at the campus lower by 2 or 3 degrees than the main city. The entire campus is well maintained and very clean. The boys and the girl's hostels are also decent enough.

  • You do not have to share your hostel room with anyone else in the MBA program. The hostel accommodation is compulsory as the lectures go on till evening and the overall fees include the hostel accommodation mandatorily. Also, the Hyderabad localities must stay in hostels since it is a residential business school.

  • The food in the mess ranges from average to good. Just the roties cooked are not very impressive and the mess people do not believe in the ghee product as a normal addition to the rotis which makes them taste a little bad. However, you're bound to adapt to it over time. There is 2 mess in the campus and 2 cafeterias just above each of them. You get almost everything to eat there, ranging from Parathas to biscuits of all brands. The hostels also have night canteens which function till 2am at night and till 4am during the end sem exams for students. The food there is quite tempting.

  • The classrooms are big enough to accommodate a strength of 90 students per section and there are 14 such classes, well equipped with ACs, a computer, and a projector each. The entire campus has Wi-Fi. The library has a wide variety of books of all relevant fields of study. The library also has a good infrastructure equipped with everything needed in a decent library.

  • There are 2 IT Labs in the campus with more than 100 desktops in each.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

  • To start with, my business school, that's IBS takes in a complete lot of 1200 students each year (which was 900 for the earlier batch) into it's Masters of Business Administration (MBA) course. The 3 routes to get into this school are
  1. 1. The B-school's own test, IBSAT, OR
  2.  2. A minimum percentile of 60 in CAT, OR
  3.  3. Around 160 raw scores in your NMAT (Narsee Monjee Aptitude test).
  • So, that supposedly makes it a little easier to get in than any other well-known business schools in the country. You're bound to clear the aptitude test even if you weren't all that prepared (since the statistics of my year showed that 25000 out of the 30000 applicants who appeared for the test were given a call from the state of Gujarat.) It is just the round of the GDPI that decides which campus out of the 8 campuses of IBS would you be allowed, based on your percentile which is again based on how well you do in the GDPI round and your past academic record (graduation and 12th).

Academics and Faculty

3

  • The majority of the teaching faculty holds a Ph.D. degree in their respective fields and are always available in their respective cabins in the academics block of the campus up to 6pm in the evening to help you with any of your queries in their subject. The classroom teaching ranges from average to good. IBS, Hyderabad follows 100% case based learning which helps you with great insights into the corporate world and the management situations that await you at the end of your 2 year MBA course.
The lectures usually begin at 9:30 in the morning and go on till 4:30. However, there aren't any more of 2 lectures back to back and there is always a break in between. The duration of the lectures is 75 minutes. Also, you try remaining attentive in the class and participate because you do not want to miss out on the 'Class Participation' marks that IBS, Hyderabad includes as a part of the overall academic evaluation. (which is one positive thing about the business school that I like.)
  • Also, you have one online MCQ exam each month for the 4-month long semester except the first month of your semester. Thus, it is all a continuous process and you are being evaluated at every point, eventually adding up to the overall academic evaluation at the end of your semester.

Clubs and Associations

4

  • There are around 30-40 clubs for the students to join the ones they're specifically interested in. Each club is a field specific club or a leisure activity specific club. For example, MAVERICK is one marketing specific club, FINSTREET is financed specific while SAMAVESH is a cultural activities specific club and PRAKRITI is an adventure and trekking specific club. These clubs are a good way to keep you busy in learning some extra things which you do not learn inside classrooms like organizing events, hosting them etc. However, you haven't to forget that these clubs would not help you in getting placed at the end of the day. Therefore, choose wisely. At the same time, it's not even mandatory to be in any club.

  • Just like I joined one club and left upon realizing that I was being expected to devote more of my time than what I had expected and that the same could probably hamper my studies. It's on how you take it.

  • The campus has :

  1. An indoor stadium which has 3 badminton courts and 7 rooms for practices,

  2. A basketball court,

  3. 2 lawn tennis courts,

  4. A huge ground for cricket and football,

  5. A gymnasium,

  6. A swimming pool

  •  The life in college is pretty good.
