Placements and Internships

3

  • As it has recently turned into a central institution, it currently does not have an effective training and placement coordination system in place.
  • The internships and VTs are mostly arranged by students personally without any assist from institute currently, though few companies visit to offer internships like CESC,PWC,TATA STEEL,DDT( POLARIS NETWORKS) etc .
  • Some of the faculty members, though, can help by giving recommendations in companies or academic institutions.
  • The placement scenario has improved a lot in past 3-4 years.
  • Though core companies of every discipline do not visit the campus, but analytics based and IT based companies do come and take students from IIEST.
  • Talking especially about the circuit branches (CSE,IT,ETC,EE), many companies visit the campus. We have recruiters like PWC, ZS Associates, Mu Sigma, NRI fintech, Directi, Amazon, Tata Metaliks, Maruti Suzuki, CESC, Tata Steel and few other reputed names visit our campus every year. The number is increasing every year and so the opportunities.
  • The average salary figure is around Rs 4.5-5.5 lakhs per annum.
  • The mass recruiters' package is around Rs 3.2 lakhs per annum. Core, non-CS/IT companies pay around RS 5.5-7.5 lakhs per annum.
  • The highest salary figure depends on the company that visits, though normally it is around Rs 26-30 lakhs per annum which is offered by Directi or Amazon.
  • Being one the oldest colleges of India, it boasts of having its alumni in many giant companies spread all across the globe. It sometimes helps in inviting a company to a campus for job/internship.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

3

  • The college has 3 boys hostels for UG 1st years and 2 hostels for the 2nd year students.
  • A hostel consists of students of a particular year only; 4 in each room.
  • There are 5 halls (single accommodation) for UG final year and few pre-final year students.
  • Though accommodation for boys is not guaranteed but outstation students generally get hostels.
  • There is 1 girls hostel for UG 1st years. For all other year female students, one hall is provided. All the female students get accommodation inside the campus.
  • In the case of post-graduates, there are 2-3 hostels for boys and 1 hall for girls.
  • There is not much option available as PG just outside the campus. The cost is very economical in case of PG also.
  • The campus life here is of the best that one can get in his college life. The food in the hostel is fine and a variety of food is served. The mess charge is Rs 3000 per month.
  • The campus is developing in terms of infrastructure. Some classrooms and hostels are being built to accommodate future students.
  • The wifi here is best-in-class and free of cost; though some restrictions are there.
  • The labs are well equipped and of standard quality with internet connections.
  • The library has a good collection of books and journals. 4 books can be issued at a time at IIEST.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

  • IIEST Shibpur (erstwhile BESU) is a central institution of India in which intake of students is through JEE MAIN only.
  • You have to appear in JEE main in order to be eligible to take admission here.
  • IIEST, along with NITs, participates in the central counselling conducted by CBSE and takes admission through this counselling alone. The course provided here at bachelor level is 5-year INTEGRATED DUAL DEGREE (Btech- Mtech) course ONLY and not the 4-year Btech course as in NITs.
  • There are postgraduate programmes in engineering, science and management as well.
  • As it takes undergraduates through JEE MAIN, 50% seats are reserved for home state candidates.
  • The approximate cut off rank of various disciplines in JEE MAIN are:-
  1. CSE- 3000-18000
  2. ETC- 4500-25000
  3. EE- 9500-25000
  4. ME- 10000-24500
  5. CE- 17000-35000
  6. IT- 15000-29000
  7. MINING-26000-34000
  8. MET- 26000-33000
  9. AE- 9000-30000
  10. ARCH- 1600-4000
  • The strength of DUAL DEGREE students in each department vary.
  • The intake is to be doubled from 60 to 120 in a systematic manner during 5 years starting from 2014. So the current strength of various departments is around 70-90.

Academics and Faculty

4

  • The academic system in the college is well balanced so as to give importance to subjects in a proper ratio.
  • The college has CGPA system of grading. Here each subject has different weightage depending on its importance.
  • For instance, core subjects normally have a credit of 4 whereas non-core subjects have a credit of 2 or 3.
  • In Each semester, there are labs which are sessional; one needs to clear it in one attempt otherwise year lag is given.
  • There are a mid-semester and final semester exam in each semester curriculum.
  • For theoretical subjects, there is a provision of supplementary exams in case candidate fails to clear it in one attempt.
  • A student with more than 4 backlogs in an even semester is failed.
  • The professors, in general, are learned and intellectual. They try to clear the concepts of the subjects they teach.
  • Additional doubts can be asked to them freely after classes. They also have lots of research projects under them; some of them are industry-academia collaborated projects.
  • Some professors go to foreign institutes as visiting faculty and vice versa. There are few smart classes in each department with mikes, projectors and speakers. Though traditional blackboard is generally preferred.
  • In some departments like CSE and EEE, mini projects are allotted to students right from 3rd sem onwards so as to introduce them to the concept of research.
  • The class timing is 8AM TO 5 PM with a break from 11.40 AM - 1.20 PM. Saturday and Sunday are holidays at IIEST.
