Placements and Internships

2

  • Major IT companies frequent NIE each year. Microsoft, SAP, JP Morgan, D E Shaw are few of the big names that visit the campus for recruitment. Roles offered during campus placement are IT engineer, tester, developer etc.
  • The average salary might be around Rs 3 LPA (not sure though). Highest salary offered has been on the rise every year. There are companies which offer Rs 25 LPA to prospective employees. But having said that, it is noteworthy that such companies hire a mere 1 or 2 students. Companies with salaries ranging from Rs 6 LPA to Rs 10 LPA are quite a few with promising job profiles. The department of CSE and ISE has a good placement record with around 70-80% students being placed every year. However, other departments struggle miserably to get companies to visit the campus and students from other branches too have to apply to IT companies due to the deficit of profiles offered relating to their branch.
  • The alumni network is poor with almost no interaction with the students currently enrolled in the institution.

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

1

  • There is just one hostel for boys and one for the girls. Accommodation is indeed a sad story in NIE. The boys hostel is dilapidated but the newly built girls hostel is in a good condition. However, limited number of hostel rooms is a grave matter of concern for the students who do not belong to Mysore. The hostel fee is around Rs. 5000 per year(inclusive of hostel mess fee).
  • There are numerous PGs and houses that are rented out to both boys and girls. on an average, accommodation would cost around Rs 3000-6000 per month to a student depending on the type of room rented.
  • The food in college is not good. There are just two canteens in the entire college. Food sold is cheap but nearly inedible.
  • Infrastructure of the college is the same as that of a governent school which lacks funding. The classrooms are provided with projectors but the furniture is old(being replaced gradually). Paying 1.5lakhs for studying in the institution, one does wonder where the funds are spent.

Entrance Exams and Admissions

  • The Eligibility criteria for admission to NIE is either through CET(for students of Karnataka) or COMEDK(for Karnataka & non-Karnataka students). Considered as one among the top 5 engineering colleges in Karnataka, the score should be reasonably high to get an admission into the institute.
  • I got an admission to the college through COMEDK entrance exam in 2013 with a rank of 3319.
  • Typically, the cutoff for CSE in NIE ranges from rank 2300(starting) to 4500(ending) with slight variations over the years.

Academics and Faculty

1

  • The daily routine differs from class to class. Classes may start as early as 7.30 A.M. and may end at 5.15P.M. But, there are not more than 6 classes per day.
  • The quality of teaching is sub-standard if not poor. Faculty is qualified with a few professors with doctorate degrees. But the knowledge imparted to students is strictly curriculum based. This impairs the growth of the student as a free thinker.
  • Overall, it depends on the student how he manages his time and learns to be self-dependent for knowledge outside the course offered. If hard work is put in, college is a fun place to be in.

Fees and Scholarships

1

  • Fee structure differs for students admitted under COMEDK and CET.

COMEDK- Rs 1.5 LPA (education fee only)

CET- Rs 40000 LPA (education fee only)

However, students under reservations(caste based) are offered great reductions in the fees by the government.

  • Scholarship options are limited to students belonging to the state of Karnataka only.
  • The number of students who receive scholarships is few due to lack of options.
  • The college fee matches those of the other engineering colleges under COMEDK. Majority of the students apply for loans to pay for the tuition. Loans are easily availed from banks.

Clubs and Associations

1.5

  • There are just a handful clubs in the campus, 2 to be precise. One being the IEEE club and the other ONYX, the entrepreneurship cell of the college. Activities conducted by these clubs are uninteresting and are thus rarely appreciated.
  • There are no festivals celebrated on campus. However, interbranch sports and cultural activities are held once a year.
  • College life in NIE is basically unenterprising. But once students get used to the culture in the college and explore their field of  interest, it somewhat becomes bearable.
