Placements and Internships

3.5

  • The Placement Scenario at Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Mandi is quite good for CSE students, but it's very bad for EE and ME students. Almost all the CSE students have got placed in the year 2015. Same is the scene with Internship. Many known companies, such as Flipkart, Amazon, Microsoft visit the campus for CSE students (Internship and Placement), but very few core EE and ME companies visit the campus. Key companies that hire from our campus for the role of SDE/SDET include Flipkart, Amazon, Microsoft, Drishti-Soft, Samsung Research, Practo, Grofers.
  • Average Salary (per year) for CSE: Rs 11 lakhs per annum, ME : Rs 7 lakhs per annum, EE: Rs 7 lakhs per annum. Highest Salary for CSE: Rs 27.4 lakhs per annum (India). Percentage of CSE batch that got places: 98%

College Infrastructure and Hostel Facilities

3.5

  • There are almost 14 hostels at Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Mandi. Most of them provide quite a good living condition and are properly ventilated, maintaining a cool atmosphere inside the rooms. Hostel and Mess fee combines is 18,500 INR per semester.
  • Since, IIT Mandi is situated in a remote place, their is no option of PGs outside college.
  • The food mess in the college is average. However, all sorts of foods, ranging from south Indian to north Indian are cooked, the food quality is not up to the mark.
  • Classrooms, Labs, Libaries are well equipped. The internet speed averages to about 3 mbps, viz quite good.

Academics and Faculty

3

  • All the classes and labwork at Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Mandi takes place between 8 AM and 6 PM, although sometimes professors tend to keep the classes as late has 9 PM too, when the syllabus lacks behind the schedule. Most of the courses involve assignments or projects or both.
Each theory lecture is of 50 minutes duration followed by a 10 minutes break. Each semester, students have to write 2 Quizzes and one End-Sem exam for each course, which becomes quite tiresome.
  • The quality of teaching depends from one branch to the other and also, from one teacher to the other. Most of the faculties are highly qualified and motivated towards teaching. At the end, it's the student who is supposed to put in the efforts.
  • The overall academic experience is average for CSE students, as many of them don't learn much required CS courses during their 4 years B.Tech. degree. It's below average for EE and ME students.

Fees and Scholarships

4.5

  • The course fee of IIT Mandi for B.Tech is INR 1,00,000 INR per annum.
  • MCM (Merit-Cum-Means) Scholarship is available to the students. It's offered to the top ten students (academically) from each branch, whose parents' annual income is lessers than 6 Lacs/annum, every year. Several other scholarships for the backward communities are also offered.
  • The average number of students who get a scholarship is 12 from each branch consisting of 40-50 students.
  • Since this is a government college, the fee is quite less, but if needed, several banks such as SBI and PNB offer scholar loans to IITians.

Clubs and Associations

4

  • All the clubs inside Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Mandi are managed by the students and faculties combined. Each club has one or more student co-ordinator and one or more faculty co-ordinators. There are several clubs, such as, Poetry Club, Art Geeks Club, Programming Club, Robotics Club, Electronics Club and many more.
  • Several festivals, such as tech-cult and sports fests take place inside the campus.
  • The college life is quite good, there are not a lot of people like in big colleges, and it's the best place to enjoy nature in its purest form.

Academics & Faculty : IIT Mandi is one of the finest colleges in India when it comes to academics. It being an IIT is already a part of an elite group of institutions. Talking of faculty here, they need to have a Ph.D at least to be recruited here and they follow an interactive method of teaching to help the students throught the process. The classes are generally timed between 8AM and 5PM with weekly assignments and exams thrice a semester. All major courses have a project associated with them that the students need to finish by the end of the semester. Students are given the freedom to choose majority of the courses according to their interests and many students opt for a semester exchange in other universities too, in Germany, Sweden and Denmark majorly as the college provides a chance for the same. Apart from B.Tech, IIT Mandi has M.Tech, M.S, M.Sc, and Ph.D as other domains for the students. Overall I would say that this is a fine institute to come to an

Academics & Faculty : Quality of academics is on par with the other older IITs. But the shortage of good faculty is a con. Some of the courses were offered through NKN from the older IITs, though a bit ineffective it partially addressed the issue.
