Recently UPES team has achieved all India 2nd rank in CanSat 2020. CanSat is an annual competition held for teams from colleges and universities across the world. The teams are expected to design and build a space type system. The winners will be determined by the launch of the actual rocket.
CanSat, an annual student design-build launch competition held by American astronautical society AAS. The team Astral from up second nationally and seventh globally. The competition has three stages: The first stage is preliminary design review PDR second is critical design review CDR and at last post-flight review PFR. The team comprised 19 students – Sarvesh Kumar Yadav, Dushyant Singh, Lavanya Awasthi, Adwait, Harsh Kongre, Shreyas, Shraddha Konwar, Kumar Milton, Shreyash, Sourav Thakur, Shivansh Upadhyaya, Himanshu Sharma, Harshit Goel, Ayush Gupta, and Arya. Mr. Zozimus Labana, from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, was the faculty advisor.
The importance of the competition is to design a CanSat which should be made up of a container and a Science payload “The science payload shall be a delta wing glider that will glide in a circular pattern, once released. The CanSat shall be launched to an altitude ranging from 670 meters to 725 meters above the launch site and deployed near apogee (peak altitude). The orientation of deployment is not controlled and is most definitely violent. The CanSat container must protect the science payload from damage during the launch and deployment.”
The competition was sponsored by US naval research laboratory NASA Goddard American astronautical society Virginia tech, Siemens praxis Inc, Kratos, Lockheed Martin, and NRV rocketry. With all the collaborations and exposure the university provides to the students UPES University provides its worth for the investment done by students for their education in the university. The competition was indeed a great milestone for UPES students.
