Tension Builds In Jiwaji University as Students Protest

Since BJP’s massive victory in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, tension has been building in the university as students allege that ABVP, a right wing organisation has been dominating the Dalits in the university.

Dalit Students Protest

To protest university administration’s denial to allow them to hold a programme ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti, five Dalit students had also been on indefinite fasts. Two of them were also hospitalised.

Slogans like ‘Hume chaahiye azadi’ and ‘Hum lekar rahenge azadi’ were shouted by the students in protest to the administration's biased behaviour against the Dalits. Students that the right wing organisations such as the RSS and the ABVP are supressing the democratic rights of the Dalit students.

The administration of the university, however, states that they students are making these allegations by getting influenced by Kanhaiya Kumar of JNU. They also accuse the students of promoting anti-national activities.

All these protests started in 2014 when ABVP held a conference which the Dalit students refused to attend due to their different ideologies. The ABVP volunteers misbehaved with the students because they refused to attend the conference. 

The university also reduced the scholarships for the Dalit students and the students had to take the matter to the high court to get full scholarships.
