'Justified' suspicion on universities

The Government of India suspects that some of the country's most prestigious universities are underperforming and has, hence, asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to audit them for academic quality and research quality.The officials on behalf of the government said that they have reason to believe that the country's most prestigious universities are underperforming and they need to know why.The Union ministry of HRD has identified a number of “nonperforming“ centrally funded institutions, and of these, 11 will undergo the audit, according to a senior ministry official.The Mangalayatan University, The Allahabad University and The Pondicherry University.“There is an urgent need to look at the universities and their performance. Academic and research quality at the universities reflect the quality of education in the country. There will be various other factors, such as frequency of review of courses, new courses, and how relevant current campus research is, which will be taken into account,“ said a senior UGC official. “The idea is to find out if the return on investment is being justified and whether students are getting the kind of education.After replacing foreign authors from the syllabus, Rajasthan University's commerce department has replaced their works from the list of dissertation topics.

Vedas foolishly prioritised over Finance Books

The suggested topics for dissertation include Vedas and management, Lord Krishna, Lord Mahavir, Mahatma Gandhi, the relevance of Gita, management of stress through Yoga, etc.These were included by axing topics on sectors like banking, finance or specific studies on government financial bodies for dissertations by semester. The commerce department said changes in the dissertation were part of its efforts to "Indianise" higher education step by step. Mathur argued that while working on the dissertation students will study these scriptures in depth and would able to learn the Indian value system along with management lessons. The university has also introduced new topics on paper presentations for semester 2nd students. Management will cooperate
The Universities said that they will show their utmost cooperation and coordinate with the University Grants Commission to meets ends with the University Grants Commission and get to the bottom of it.They had initially rejected such suspicions with strong words and aggression. The vice chancellor refuses to make any comments. The student unions remained silent on the same. Some students alleged that there was some sort of an unofficial series of meetings were held with student unions and other public figures with a political background which may be directly or indirectly related to the allegations and the probe initiated by the Government of India.
The story is still developing and the University Grants Commission (UGC) is investigating the matter and will report to the Government of India.
