Regional Institute of Aviation, Thiruvananthapuram (RIA-T) was established in the year 2008. This institute has been approved by Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Govt. of India, New Delhi vide letter no. DAW/ TRG/ 2008/ 1218 dated 10/09/2008 under category ‘G’ Training School, to impart ab-initio training in the field of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering leading to Basic Licence in Mechanical Stream [Heavy Aeroplane, Light Aeroplane, Jet Engine and Piston Engine]. Within a short period of time, this institute has received a combined approval from DGCA for Mechanical as well as Avionics stream [Electrical system, Instrument system and Radio Navigation system] vide letter no. DAW/ TRG/ 2008/ 1218 dated 18/09/2009.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course gives access to real time aircraft experience. It is a balanced practical and theory-based course for the AME license from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India, for maintaining aeroplanes. Making the modern aircraft airworthy cannot be made possible but for the technical skill and hard work of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. They are primarily responsible for keeping the aircraft in airworthy and also issue certificate of airworthiness before flight. Essential systems like airframe, engine, instruments, radio and navigation equipment etc., are also being certified by Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. They work for airlines, maintenance divisions of aero-engine manufactures and approved aircraft maintenance organizations.
