The College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Mathura is a constituent college of Uttar Pradesh Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go-Anusandhan Sansthan, Mathura. The college has been started with a view of providing education in the field of Animal Husbandry.  The College provides a degree in Veterinary Science and it is the first Veterinary College in Asia to confer the degree in Veterinary Science. The College itself has a research centre where students and faculties try to find new innovation which can help the country and society. 

The College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Mathura is trying to Strengthen the training which is provided to students with special emphasis on capacity building. The College also emphasize at providing opportunities to faculty and staff members to improve their scientific working capacity and capability to make the university a determined organization. 

The College dispenses need-based applied and basic research in strategic and emerging areas of animal health. The college stimulates farmers through its Technology Information system and provides them with continuous improvement in production and productivity of their livestock and economy. The Institution has collaborated with state agriculture and animal husbandry functionaries, Indian Council of Agriculture Research, institutes related to animal health and production and many NGOs.  The college has provided Empowerment to the women to become ' Knowledgeable Livestock Stakeholder' by giving them an economic identity. College of Veterinary Science and Anima, Husbandry admissions are provided for the courses like Ph.D, MVSc, BVSc and AH.

College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Faculties:

Anatomy:

Since the establishment of the Veterinary college, this department is imparting education at the graduate level. Along with the very large departmental museum, there is a very rich collection of histology and histochemically stained slides and all these help in effective teaching and in practical training to students. The Anatomy department of the college has done research on various subjects matter like buffaloe's skin, endocrine glands, blood, male and female reproductive system, mammary gland, teat, thymus, placenta and many more. The department organizes seminars on a regular basis. Recently the Department Organized XXVIth Annual Convention of Indian Association of Veterinary Anatomists (IAVA) and three days National Symposium. Right now, The department has 06 full-time faculties.

Research: 

  • Gross anatomical, Histological and a histochemical study on stomach and heart of a prenatal goat.
  • Histological and histochemical study on the skin of a prenatal goat. 

Achievements:

  • First Ph.D in Veterinary has been completed in this department.

Animal Genetics and Breeding:

The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding was started in 1952. Many research has been executed by the department. Some all India coordinated research project on Poultry for Eggs, Reciprocal Recurrent Selection in Poultry, Characterization and Conservation of Bhadawari buffalo and Conservation and multiplication
of Bhadawari buffalo through Cryo-preservation of semen has been also executed by the department. Biostatistics and Computer Application Section of the Department takes care of teaching of all the courses and also
helps and guide postgraduate students in research data analysis. The department has 05 full-time faculties

Research: 

  • Conservation and Genetic Improvement of Muzaffarnagari Sheep for Multiplication of Superior germplasm
  • Association between polymorphisms of Interleukin-2 [IL-2] and Signal transducers & activators of transcription 5 A [STAT5A] genes with milk production traits in Sahiwal and Hariana cattle
  • Association between polymorphisms of Solute carrier 27A1 [SLC27A1] genes with milk production traits in Sahiwal and Hariana cattle

Biochemistry:

Department of Biochemistry came into existence in the year 1948. The department provides teaching and research facility to the Under Graduates as well as Post Graduates students. The department has made many contributions in the field of rumen metabolism, the effect of urea supplementation in ration on enzyme activities and other biochemical constituents, nutritional biochemistry, blood cell, biochemistry of domestic animal and birds in health and disease condition along with genetic control of red blood corpuscles enzymes, biochemical polymorphism of different constituents and their relationship with the economic trait in poultry, sheep and goat. Right now, 04 faculties are imparting education in this department.

Various ongoing Research:

  • A study on milk proteome and biochemical analysis of milk and blood of mastitis and healthy Sahiwal cows
  • Studies on Influence of certain blood adipokines and their genetic polymorphism on lactation of Sahiwal cows
  • Studies on circulating Leptin level, polymorphism of LEP and LEPR genes in Hariana cows

Physiology:

The Department of Physiology was established in 1947. For the significant contributions, the faculties of this department have been awarded. Research work in the field of male and female reproduction, environmental physiology, physiology of saliva and rumen
micro-flora have been carried out by the department. The department has Semen Technology Laboratory which is well equipped with many useful basic types of equipment like phase contrast microscope with camera, inverted microscope, fluorescent
microscope, osmometer, computer assisted semen analyzer [CASA] and laminar airflow etc. Physiology departments provide internships for 08 days to the students of BVSc & AH on goat-husbandry and semen technology as well as it also provides specialized training to field Veterinary Officers on Semen Technology and Fertility Management in cattle and buffaloes. 05 full-time faculties are available in the department.

Research: 

  • Deciphering the thermal stress associated deprotamination and DNA compaction in bull sperm
  • Modulation of host innate and adaptive immune system affecting production in Sahiwal and haryana cattle in the changing climate scenario
  • Molecular basis of host immune response in mastitic dairy cows of different production potential, parity, and lactation and identification of suitable markers for early diagnosis of subclinical mastitis and development of therapeutics for mastitis
  • Effect of mist cooling and bathing/wallowing during summer stress in lactating cattle vis-a-vis buffalo.

Veterinary and Animal Husbandry:

The department was established in the year 1962. The Departments provides education to the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programs for executing researches. The department in addition to teaching also organizes field extension programs to the livestock holders for providing innovate knowledge. This department imparts education for the courses like B.V.Sc and A.H, M.V.Sc. The Department has 03 faculties right now. 

Research: 

  • Impact assessment of livestock services delivery among livestock owners in Mathura
  • A Comparative study to assess the role of Information and Communication Technology [ICT] among livestock owners

Pharmacology and Toxicology

The Department was established in 1949 and started offering courses for Masters degree programs andDoctoratee Programs. The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology has conducted research on indigenous plants screened for different pharmacological activities and toxicity potential. It has been continuously involved in finding the treatment for goats and buffalos. The Department is well equipped with laboratories which help in research. The Faculties of the departments have been awarded many times for their excellence and achievements. The department has 04 faculties who are imparting education to the students.

Research: 

  • Novel herbal oxytocic for treatment of uterine inertia in animals
  • Novel herbal antimicrobial gel (DUVATOP-G) for animals
  • Non-estrogenic and consistent rat uterus model  for pharmacodynamic studies on myometrium of cyclic rats
  • Novel herbal capsule (Pyodermacare-G) for the treatment of bacterial and mycotic dermatitis in canines

Parasitology:

The Department of Parasitology was established in the year 1949. Department has conducted the survey in different agro-climatic zones of UP to assess the incidence of parasitic infection/infestation in different species of livestock, poultry and wild & zoo animals have been undertaken. The Department has been successful in finding remedies for Parasitic Diseases of Buffaloes in India. The Faculties of the department have received many awards for their journals and research. 05 full-time faculties are available in the department

Animal Nutrition:

Department of Animal Nutrition has been established in the year 1949. In 1958, it started imparting education for the Master's degree and Doctorate Programs. After sometimes, it started providing education for Undergraduate programs also. Department has been involved in finding cheap and economic ration for various categories of livestock and poultry by use of non-conventional feed sources which includes various type of agro-industrial by-products, waste and fodders so as to spare maximum grains for human consumption. The Department has provided many tools and machines to the farmers, government officers, industry personals and livestock owners of new technology. Training is also provided by the department to the veterinary officers, livestock extension officers regarding recent developments in animal nutrition and feeding practices of livestock.

Department of Veterinary Pathology:

The Department of Veterinary Pathology has been imparting education for Masters Degree and Doctorate programs since 1948. Many research has been conducted by the department on the various diseases of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, laboratory animals and birds. Infrastructure has been well developed by the departments. Well equipped Department labs for hematology, clinicopathology, histochemistry, immunopathology and pathomorphology are provided by the Department.

Research:

  • Toxicopathology of various agrochemical and biological toxicants in poultry and laboratory animals
  • Investigation of infectious diseases of lab animals, poultry, wild birds, small and large ruminants, wild and zoo animals by means of clinic-pathological and histomorphological features

The department has been always successful in inventing many findings in many areas like Incidence of lymphosarcoma in buffaloes, Ultimobranchial lymphoid tumours in buffaloes, Acanthamoeba in lungs of buffaloes, Underdeveloped and atrophied fallopian tube in poultry, Quail enteritis, Marek’s disease in poultry, Avian respiratory chlamydiosis, Transmission of Maedi in the host and experimental animals, Nephroblastoma in the young calf, Dropsy syndrome in buffalo, sheep and poultry.

Veterinary Microbiology:

The Department of Microbiology came into existence in the year 1950. It imparts instruction in Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology, and Mycology for the award of B. V. Sc. & A.H. and M.V.Sc. degrees. The department has been always successful in finding bacterias and viruses and their significance through its qualified faculties. The existence and incidence of Infectious Bronchitis [IB] and Infectious laryngotracheitis [ILT] viruses of poultry have been reported by this department. The round heart disease of poultry in India was also reported from this department. It has been recognized for the Doctorate and the post-doctorate research work.

Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine:

Department of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine was established in 1991. The department offers 03 undergraduate courses, 14 postgraduate courses and different PhD courses. The Department has helped in taking corrective measures against the animal disease. Research activities broadly include animal disease investigation and surveillance work on different animal diseases of economic importance. 

Research:

  • Impact of RB-51 vaccination in control of bovine brucellosis sponsored by Uttar Pradesh Council of Agriculture Research (UPCAR)
  • Development of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for specific detection of Mycoplasma agalactiae and study of its molecular epidemiology in small ruminants under ICAR emeritus scientist scheme
  • Molecular Epidemiology of the Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) Virus and development of quick diagnostic tool in ruminants funded by Uttar Pradesh Council of Agriculture Research (UPCAR)
  • All India Coordinated Research Project on Epidemiological Studies on Foot and Mouth Diseases. – funded by ICAR
  • Studies on "Campylobacter" infection in dogs of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh” sponsored by University (DUVASU), Mathura

Veterinary Medicine:

Department of Veterinary Medicine came into existence in 1950. It imparts education for Undergraduate, Masters degree programs and Doctorate programs. Along with education, the department also provides clinical services through Kothari Veterinary Hospital (TVCC) and ambulatory clinical services in and around Mathura district. It has contributed in helping animal health through better diagnostic, therapeutic and control measures for diseases.

Veterinary Surgery & Radiology:

The Department of Surgery & Radiology was established in the year 1950-51. It imparts education and training for the Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctorate Programs. The department provides all the facilities for research and innovations. It is equipped with some state of the art clinical facilities such as radiology wing equipped with 500mA and 100mA machine, 9‘’ C-arm image intensifier, ultrasound machine, multiparameter patient monitors, anesthetic machine, endoscopy, operating microscope, electrosurgery unit, etc.

Livestock Production and Management [LPM]:

Department of LPM came into existence in the year 1947. It offers an Undergraduate course to the students. Along with teaching, the department provides training and internships to the students on various aspects of production and management of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, horses and poultry.  The department is having 05 faculties in present

Livestock Products Technology [LPT]:

The Department of LPT came into existence after seeing the need of specialized human resources for the food processing industry. It imparts education for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs. Apart from providing education, the department is also working on product development and quality control facilities in the livestock products sector. Department is also engaged in imparting training to ex-military personnel, farmers, milk producers and livestock owners belonging to the self-help groups in areas of hygienic milk production, meat and milk processing, quality control and value addition of milk, meat and poultry.

Poultry Science:

The department was established in 1972 for providing education to the undergraduate and postgraduate students along with training. Recently Poultry Production by students under "Entrepreneurial Development Programme" has been started under the supervision of the department. 

Veterinary Public Health [VPH]:

 The Department of VPH was in the year 1988 and the postgraduate programme was introduced from the year 1993. It imparts education for the Undergraduate, Post Graduates and Doctorate programs. The department has worked in many research projects. Research has been done on various organisms like Salmonella, E.coli, B.cereus and Clostridium spp. in the department. The students of the department have been awarded many of times for their research and findings

Research:

  • Diagnosis of Brucellosis in cattle, buffalo, sheep and goat maintained at organized and unorganized farms
  • Detection of microbial load in environmental sources & foods of animal origin [milk, meat, fish and their products]

Facilities: 

  • Detection of foodborne pathogens like Coli, VTEC, Salmonella, Staphylococcus
  • Bacteriological Quality analysis of milk through DMC, SPC, MBRT, MRT & Coliform test and Detection of Adulteration in milk for Starch & Urea
  • Molecular detection for VTEC & Brucella through mPCR
  • Antibiotic Sensitivity test

Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex [TVCC]:

The Department of TVCC provides experimental learning which helps in the overall development of the students. The Department provides computer-assisted teaching room, sterile supply section, diagnostic laboratory having blood chemistry analyzer and haematology analyzer, orthopedic and small animal operation room with the state of art facilities like 9” C-arm image intensifier, X-ray, diathermy, electro-surgery unit, minimally invasive surgery unit, multi-parameter monitor, operating microscope for ophthalmic and micro-surgery, large animal operation room, diagnostic imaging section having two ultra-sound machines, large animal shed, six individual consultation cabins, change room etc.
