Percentile for any exam is calculated in a similar way. Percentile by definition means it is the representation of a particular rank taking into consideration the ranks of all the candidates that have appeared for a particular exam at a particular time.
Similarly, CAT Percentile is calculated by taking into consideration the number of people who have appeared for the exam and the scores secured by all the candidates; e.g., Let us consider the number of people who have appeared for CAT 2019 to be 1,00,000. Once the results are out, everyone’s net scores are calculated and placed in descending order.
If Candidate X has a rank of 1000, the percentile is calculated in the following way:
(99,000/1,00,000) x100 = 99%tile.
CAT Percentile is calculated up to the third decimal point and then rounded off; e.g., If the calculated percentile is 99.995 and above, it is considered as 100%tile.
The following table gives a comparison of CAT Percentile with respect to CAT Score. The information is based on the results of CAT 2015.
