- CAT Exam Marks
Updated on - Dec 04th, 2020 | 01:06 PM by Vishag V H
CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is the test, conducted for admitting aspirants for postgraduate management programme in IIMs and also in other leading B-schools around the country. The CAT Score is very essential for the aspirant who wants to pursue an MBA degree in a good college. The candidate has to score very well and clear the cutoff in order to get into the desired college.
What is a Scaled Score and Percentile?
Raw Score: Raw score is simply calculated using the number of questions you answered correctly. The maximum possible raw score is the total marks secured by the candidate which is based on the sectional scores.
Scaled Score: A scaled score is a representation of the raw score that has been converted based on a consistent and standardized scale. Raw Score is "normalized" as it differs for candidates based on the alternate sessions of CAT Exam.
Percentile: A percentile is the rank of a candidate in an examination, relative to the rest of the candidates who appeared for the same examination in the same time-frame.
Let's say there were 10 students who gave an exam, including you. If you ranked 1st, then there are 9 students behind you who took the Test, or 90% of the test-takers are ranked after you. Which means that you have a 90% percentile score. The CAT percentile is also calculated in the same way based on the candidates appeared for the exam and the scaled score you obtained.
CAT Exam Total Marks
CAT exam has three major sections for English, Maths and Reasoning. The three sections are:
- Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VARC) - 34 Questions
- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) - 32 Questions
- Quantitative Aptitude (QA) - 34 Questions
Each section will have MCQ questions and also Non-MCQ questions. 3 marks will be rewarded for every correct answer for both MCQ and Non-MCQ and 1 mark will be deducted for the wrong answer if it is MCQ and it will not be deducted for Non-MCQ. There will be 4 choices of questions.
The CAT exam is for a total of 300 marks, as the CAT Exam has 100 questions and each carries 3 marks for a correct answer.
What is the minimum mark to qualify for CAT Exam?
The minimum mark to qualify for the CAT exam depends on which B-School you are targeting. The percentile required by B-Schools differs from one to another.
Based on which B-School you are targeting, the minimum mark changes. You have to score the minimum required mark or cutoff of your desired B-School to get into that. Though most of the candidates aim for the top (A+ category) B-Schools like IIMs, MDI, IIFT and a lot more, there are others who aim for other B-Schools like Fore, UBS, etc.
CAT Cutoff
Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) and other participating institutes release CAT cut off to shortlist candidates for admission process into various Postgraduate Management Programme. CAT 2019 is to be conducted on November 24 by IIM Kozhikode. The total marks secured by the candidate decides percentile of the student. CAT Cutoff is determined by the following factors.
- Number of applicants for CAT Exam.
- Level of difficulty of the CAT Exam.
- Number of seats available under CAT.
- Number of participating institutes
- The reputation and ranking of the institute.

The CAT cutoff depends largely on the difficulty level of the exam and it’s important to know that the exam last year was moderately tough. The CAT 2018 result was declared on January 5, 2019. Generally, after the result, each IIM or private B-School will release the list of shortlisted candidates. After that, the institutes will conduct the selection rounds - Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), Written Ability Test (WAT). Based on this a candidate will be admitted into a college.
The CAT exam results are expected in the second week of January 2020. After the results are out, each b-school and each IIM will reveal its cutoff in their official website.
