Paris Saint-Germain has made exceptional progress to become one of the most successful and attractive sports clubs in the world. Innovation is at the heart of the club’s progress strategy. Paris Saint-Germain is now a sporting pioneer taking innovation even further by launching the ‘Sports Analytics Challenge’: an elite data science programme. The programme is run in partnership with École Polytechnique and will allow the most outstanding analyst from anywhere in the world selected using a thorough process to work at École Polytechnique\'s Center for Applied Mathematics.

École Polytechnique, also known as L’X, is the leading French institution combining top-level research, academics, and innovation at the cutting-edge of science and technology. As a widely internationalized university, École Polytechnique offers a variety of international programs and attracts a growing number of foreign students and researchers from around the globe (currently 40% of students and 39% of faculty members). École Polytechnique offers an exceptional education to prepare bright men and women to excel in top-level key positions and lead complex and innovative projects which meet the challenges of 21st-century society, all while maintaining a keen sense of their civil and social responsibilities. École Polytechnique is a founding member of Institut Polytechnique de Paris. L’X has embarked on an ambitious plan to develop high-level scientific research into sports and parasports and aims to become an international leader in the field by working with the best academic institutions as well as top-level sports partners, such as Paris Saint-Germain.

 Problem Statement:

The issues of the challenge:- To use a data set we provide to create an algorithm that will help optimize all aspects of sports performance before, during and after matches!

Your mission:- Train an algorithm (Python or R) on the first part of the season that we will test on the second part. 15 minutes of a game will be randomly selected in the second half of the season. Your algorithm will have to return the identity of a player who has performed certain actions as well as predictions about the next event to take place on that game.


Combining scientific and sporting excellence for better performance:

100,000 Euro:- The overall winner will receive funding for research into optimizing sports performance to be carried out in Paris with Paris Saint-Germain and École Polytechnique (Ph.D.- or post-doctoral-level) totaling 100,000 euros. Can’t do this kind of Ph.D. or post-doc work after the challenge? You can still enter the competition and try to win one of the other prizes!

Top 5:- The five finalists will have the chance to present their results to analysts at Europe’s best football clubs during the Grand Final on 21 May 2019 at Parc des Princes as part of the Striving for Excellence conference. The finalists will be given extensive media coverage (press, TV and social media). They will also be given signed football shirts by the Paris Saint-Germain staff. Travel and accommodation expenses will be fully reimbursed.

Top 11:- The 11 best analysts will win personalized football shirts signed by the players!

General public:- The 50 best analysts will be highlighted in rankings published on the Paris Saint-Germain social media pages.

Students:-  A ranking of the most successful universities in the challenge will be published on the Paris Saint-Germain social media pages. Show that your university is the best!

Your algorithm (python or R) applied to the test base should allow you to:  
  1. Find out the identity of player 1
  2. For the next Opta event (first Opta event after t+15), find out if the team will be 1 (home) or 0 (outdoors)
  3. For the next Opta event, find the associated position (y,x) 
The algorithm must return a CSV file without a header whose components are four real numbers:
  1. Player ID
  2. 1 or 0 for the team at home or away
  3. Y
  4. X

 Rules and Guidelines:


This Challenge is open and offered solely to:

  • Students. Any individual aged eighteen (18) years and/or with full legal capacity, who (i) is currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution or (ii) has recently graduated from a post-secondary institution less than 2 years before the current academic year, with a student card as verification. Each Student may only participate once in each Challenge. If the participant is a minor, he/she must provide this authorization signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Individual Participants. Individuals aged eighteen (18) years and/or with full legal capacity at the time of registration. Each Individual Participant may only participate once in each Challenge.
    All the documents that may confirm the Participant’s eligibility may be required prior to awarding any prizes (e.g. identity document, student card etc.).
  • This Challenge is not open to employees and representatives of the Sponsors and Agorize and the members of their families.
  • This Challenge is void in countries where it is prohibited or restricted by law.

Registration and participation in the challenge:-

  • To take part in the Challenge, we must receive your completed registration by the 15 April 2019 at 11.59pm.
  • To register, the Participant must first have created a user account on the Challenge website and must have truthfully and accurately completed the required information, such as full name, email address, etc.
