Sainik Schools are a chain of schools managed by the Sainik Schools Society under the Ministry of Defence. The idea was first conceptualized by the former Defense Minister of India, V.K Krishna Mohan, in 1961. The idea behind setting up the Sainik school in India was to provide equal opportunities for everyone to be a part of the National Defence Academy and Indian Naval Academy and overcome the existing regional and class imbalance. There are currently over 33 Sainik schools in India, and there are many more in the pipeline awaiting approval to help its presence reach every state in the country.

Admission Process for Sainik Schools
The admission procedure is common for admission into all of the Sainik schools in India. The school conducts the admission process for only boys moving to class 6th and class 9th. The first step of the admission process is to fill out the online application form, which will be available on the school's official website. Admission into Sainik Schools India is based upon merit assessed through the student's performance in the written All India Sainik School Entrance Exam followed by an interview and medical examination. The written examination is normally conducted on the first Sunday of January every year and is normally based on the prescribed NCERT textbooks. The admit cards needed to appear for the written examination will be available for download on the official website upon completing the online registration process. All India Sainik School Eligibility and Entrance Exam Pattern
Class 6th - Students seeking admission to class VI in Sainik school India should be 10-11 years old. The written examination is conducted in English, Hindi, and other major regional languages within the country. The exams are conducted in three subjects :
- Mathematics and Language Ability Test (200 marks)
- Intelligence Test (100 marks)
Class 9th - Students seeking admission to class IX are required to be aged between 13 and 14 years. It is also mandatory for the students to have completed their previous year of education from a recognized school. The written examination is conducted in English. However, students are given the flexibility to attempt the paper in their preferred regional language of choice. The written examination tests the abilities of students in the following subjects -
- Mathematics and Science (200+75 marks)
- English and Social Studies (100+75marks)
67% of the available seats are allotted to the students belonging to the school's state. In comparison, the remaining 33% is open to students from other states and union territories.
Within the classification mentioned above, 25% of the seats are reserved for children of service personnel and veterans, 15% for SC candidates, and 7.5% for individuals belonging to the ST category.

India's Sainik school is residential schools for boys for classes 6th to 12th that focuses on enhancing the students' physical, mental, and intellectual skills to meet Officer Cadre's needs in defence services. Therefore mandatory NCC training is provided to all of its students. As the other formal system of schools lacks this level of focused training, primarily due to the lack of infrastructure, Sainik Schools stand out. All of the Sainik School in India follow the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum.
