Hislop College is one of the oldest colleges in Nagpur, it was founded in 1883. The college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta until 1904, and later to Allahabad University. In 1923 it was one of six colleges affiliated to the University of Nagpur, which is now known as Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. The college was named after the Scottish missionary Stephen Hislop who worked closely with Robert Hunter in the Vidarbha region. The college campus is spread across more than 7.5 acres of land in Nagpur.

Applicants to the postgraduate and diploma distance education courses should have completed their bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Applicants to the certificate distance education courses should have passed their 12th standard examination. Admission is granted based on merit in the last qualifying examination.
