Gauhati Medical College and Hospital was founded in September 1960 by Dr. SN Sarma, the founder principal. It was created by the state government and the Chief Minister of Assam at the time BP Chaliha, due to the overwhelming lack of competent medical facilities and education in Assam at the time. Since the permanent campus was not yet built, the hospital and college were located on a temporary campus. In September 1968, the permanent building of the college was inaugurated by the then-governor of Assam Dr. B K Nehru. The college is affiliated to the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences.

Students of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital are represented by the Students Union. Gauhati Medical College and Hospital UG Admission 2024 

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital offers one undergraduate medical course, MBBS. The duration of this course is 4 and a half years as well as one compulsory rotational internship of one year. All applicants to the undergraduate medical program must be of 17 years of age by the end of the calendar year.

Admission to the undergraduate medical courses is granted on the basis of state-level and national level entrance. All applicants are required to give the NEET exam. The annual intake is 156 students.

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital offers two postgraduate medical courses in MD and MS. The duration of these courses is 3 years. Students are offered specializations in both the surgery and medicine streams.

Admission to the postgraduate medical courses is granted on the basis of state-level and national level entrance exams. All applicants are required to give the NEET-PG exam.

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital SS Admission 2024

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital offers two Super-Specialty medical courses as DM and M.Ch. The duration of these courses is two years. The annual intake for these courses is two students per specialization.

Admission to the superspeciality medical courses is granted on the basis of state-level and national level entrance exams. All applicants are required to give the NEET-SS exam.

Admission to the various courses offered at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital is conducted through the counseling of various national-level exams. All applicants are required to register themselves for the necessary entrance exam as well as go through the counseling. The admission fee is based on the GMCH fee structure.
