Sikkim Manipal University Directorate of Distance Education (SMU DE) was founded in the year 2001 under Sikkim Manipal University. Sikkim Manipal University is a public-private partnership between the Government of Sikkim and Manipal Education and Medical Group launched in the year 1995.

SMU-DE is the distance education arm of SMU offering courses MCA, MBA, BCA and BBA courses which is recognised and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
