ACADEMICS & FACULTY:
  • VIT incorporates a different method of academics that is usually not seen in other colleges in our country. Students in VIT are required to choose their own class/ slot timings for each subject. They also have the freedom to choose their own faculty, subject to their liking. Now, this can be a blessing in disguise because even though they offer you enough faculty members, some of them might not be good at teaching a particular subject. Which, invariably, makes you covet for a handful of them, who are brilliant in their field. But here's the main problem, limited seats in every class. So, unless your internet is super fast and the VIT website servers work in your favour, you might not get your desired subject at all. Coming to teaching, every subject has a respective head of the department who sits with all the assigned faculty for the subject and jots down a detailed syllabus for the subject. Every faculty strictly adheres to the syllabus. We have 2 sets of internal exams of 50 each and 3 five marks quizzes and one assignment. And one final exam. Teaching is not always good ( again depends on the faculty) , but as college goers it's imperative to understand that professors are only our guide. Self study is the key to every exam ( or asking your friends). College hours stretches from 8am to 7:30am but an average student has around 4-6hours of classes everyday. From third year onwards students are given enough encouragement to work on any project idea they have under a faculty of their choice. Writing research papers is encouraged as well. The electronics and communication related labs are very well equipped, each being sponsored or maintained by different core companies like Altera, Cadence, Texas Instruments et cetera. The new electronics curriculum incorporates labs in almost every subject and students are asked to work on various challenging experiments that are out of the core set of experiments. ( Blessings in disguise). Overall, our semester is pretty packed for students. But we somehow get through. Faculty members need a lot of buttering up though! And, VIT is very, very strict about their 75% attendance requirement. No amount of persuasion of any kind will help you to sit for an exam you dont have adequate attendance for. P.S. 9 pointers and above have no attendance requirement. So strive for that!

INFRASTRUCTURE & TRANSPORTATION:
  • The infrastrucutre of the university is excellent. The quality of the hostels is decent. Air conditioned as well as non air conditioned are made available to the students. An air conditioned room is preferred because of the humidity in the atmosphere of Vellore. Sports facilities are also available to the students. Indoor sports include badminton, squash and table-tennis. There is an outdoor stadium as well  as an olympic sized swimming pool. The college library is one of the better things one can find in the campus; three stories and centrally air conditioned, it offers what the student can ever want.
  • The 350 acre campus is lush green and well maintained. There are overhead roofs on the sidewalk everywhere in the campus. Wi-Fi is available to the students in the hostels and in select places in the campus. The speed of the Wi-Fi is decent and good for normal use.
  • There are vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian in the hostels. They are futher divided into North Veg/Non-Veg; South Veg/Non-Veg and Special mess. The mess food is decent at best, but then one can only get so much.

  • The college infrastructure is one of the best parts about the campus.
From lush green walks to one of the best on campus libraries in India, Vellore Institue of Technology has it all.
  • The Hostels range from single bed, double bed, triple bed and six bed with some having A/C. The priority of getting the room of your choice depends on the CGPA. There are 12 mens hostles all around one another while the the girls having around 7.
  • There are quiet a lot of PG's around the college so any intrest in staying outside is viable. The prices as far as i know are ranging from INR 30000 to INR 70000 a month.
  • A personlised Wifi account is given to each student which consists of 8Gb of data per month. In most places the wifi is good enough to stream as well as game, lagg free not gaurenteed.
  • The quality of classrooms, labs and dining halls are as good as it can get for a college in India. The hygiene is up to the people who use it to decide, whether the crowd decides to keep in neat or not.

INFRASTRUCTURE & TRANSPORTATION:

The hostel is even huge 9 blocks for men and 5 for women that can accomodate 22,000 students. The hostel facilites are really good. And you get free WiFi access(which is limited to 8GB/month) till 12 midnight.

Accomodation is available outside the campus. And the facilities are satisfactory. The cost of living will be around Rs 7000/month (including rent).

The food in our mess is good not bad not so good. There are four to five different mess within the campus and you can choose whichever you want.Hostel fees depends on the type of room you choose(1 bed, 2 bed to 6 bed) and the mess(South Veg/Non-Veg mess, North Veg/Non-Veg mess)

The main problem for newcomers in VIT is, the campus is so huge and you have to walk. But it gets good within three months. The Academic side is great for learning and the labs have almost every instrument needed for a engineer. The library is huge(has 4 floors) and has a huge stock of books and is completely automated. It also has e-book facilites that can be accessed from within the intranet and there are facilities for photocopying within the libray. As far as academics is concerned it is one of the best in India.

SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE:
  • The social atmosphere is a little restrictive by the college but I see that change is coming and things could improve a lot here.
  • Rules are still a little too stringent but then again we do have a lot of offenders out here.
  • The management has a zero tolerance policy for offenders which is impressive. But with being not at all tolerant to brash behaviour they do restrict a lot of social interactions that could happen here on campus.
  • The management will have to tactfully make things liberal out here.
