ACADEMICS & FACULTY:
  • The regular class timings are 8:40am till 1:15 pm wherein each lecture takes an hour. The college that I am pursuing my B.A(honours) degree from, St.Stephen\'s College, is a semi autonomous college that is affiliated to the University of Delhi and is one of the most prestigious colleges of India. The degree programme follows a semester system. I am in the final semester, presently. Every semester consists of projects and assignments. The theory paper constitutes of 75 marks and the internals constitute of 25 marks, wherein the internals comprises of projects/test of 10 marks and assignments of 15 marks, depending upon however way the Professors wish to segregate the division of marks.
  • The quality of teaching is extremely serious and intellectual. They just mean academic business. The teaching methods are very fine. The methods basically comprise of professors explaining the various history topics and students making notes of the dictation. The teachers are very approachable and questions are welcomed, as many as one wishes to ask.
  • The overall experience in college is sort of academically monotonous. It\'s really enriching in all ways since the aura is so competitive in a healthy manner and people are very humble, around.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY: St. Stephen's College, New Delhi, regarded as one of the premier Science and Arts colleges in India, offers undergraduate courses in Physics, Chemistry, English, Economics, Mathematics, History, Philosophy, Sanskrit, B.Sc. (Programme) and B.A. (Programme). The nonpareil faculty members of this college, officially known as the Senior Members, are not only highly qualified academicians but also excellent human beings who are always there for the students of the college - the Junior Members - whenever they need them. Regular theory classes are held for every undergraduate course and they are complemented by weekly tutorial classes wherein the teachers review the lessons taught through the week through exercises and also clarify any doubts that the students may have. Moreover, the teachers are always approachable for clearing doubts through e-mail and during their off periods. The class hours of the science courses are particularly hectic, as there are regular and rigorous three-hour laboratory classes three to four days a week, along with intensive theoretical classes. The college hosts a huge library with thousands of books on diverse subjects ranging from Literature to Quantum Physics. The college also offers part-time Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma language courses in several languages. Recently, the college, in collaboration with Network 18, has introduced an open course on Citizenship And Cultural Richness, which is a multi-disciplinary certificate course for any citizen of Delhi with an eagerness to gain knowledge on issues ranging from Politics to Science. The weekly lectures are hosted in the College Hall by some eminent faculty members and ex-Stephenians.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY: St.Stephen's College offers BA Honors courses in Economics, English, History, Philosophy and Sanskrit, and Bsc Hons courses in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Besides these, we also have two programme courses - BA Programme and B.Sc. Programme. The subjects under each discipline are those as are prescribed in the Delhi University guidelines. Students also have to take an interdisciplinary course along with their main course. Coming to performance, our college has a consistent record of producing university medalists in many of the above mentioned courses. Unlike what I have heard is the case in other colleges at the bachelor's degree level, the teachers in St.Stephen's are a very dedicated and considerate lot. Since many of them stay in campus, it would not be a rare sight to see them mingling very closely with the students, let it be in the cafe', the gym or even the halls. I can vouch for the teachers in my course atleast that they were very much concerned about each student personally, and gave due attention to each one's shortcoming -let it be in attendance or a dropping performance or even a lack of motivation. The quality of teaching ,is as the results have proved, nothing less than outstanding. Teachers in our college, play an active role in the college societies as the staff advisors and many a times take the first step in defending the interests of the students. In short, the ecosystem at St.Stephen's will make you feel like you're back in school , if not among your family itself.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE & INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE: We have tie-ups with colleges abroad , and it would be very likely that you would have a new bunch of students from abroad studying with you as you progress across the semesters. (To say the truth, most of my interaction with the foreign exchange students has been in the gym, or the sports field or basically, outside the classroom. I hope this point pretty much explains that these foreign exchange programs have served their purposes in ways more than the authorities could have imagined :P) I am not sure if a similar arrangement exists for our students to study abroad- I would suggest that students keep checking the notice board in college for this. We have sponsored opportunities to pursue post-graduation education abroad. These include Masters (in given courses) from Brown University , USA and other colleges abroad. The college also provide various introductory sessions and funded programs with International Universities, Educational Bodies and with organisations that provide sponsorship for further studies abroad. Merit as well as need, is taken as a criteria for these programs. The exact details regarding this varies from year to year as this is decided by the college/university administrations of the countries involved.

FEES AND SCHOLARSHIP:
  • The fee for the bachelors courses is very low for the quality of education provided as the college is a part of Delhi University so there isn\'t a need for financing as such.
  • Scholarships and Financing are provided on the basis of merit.  For students, whose parents\' annual income is less than 4 lakhs probably need it, since accommodation expenses in Delhi is pretty high.
  • I\'m not sure how loans can be availed and from which banks.

PLACEMENTS & ALUMNI NETWORK: Our average placement is easily four-five time the university average. Not only are the placements higher, but also only for meaningful jobs. Our placement cells is one of the most widely sought after in the country in the undergrad level and atleast during my time in college, it was one of the most hardworking societies in college. Despite a not-much-impressive academic record in college, I never found it difficult to bag a meaningful internship in all my three years here. The internships opportunities could be in any of the field of your liking- research, consultancy, marketing, HR, finance, social service etc in different parts of the country. Placement opportunities would be available in similar sectors and can have the likes of large MNCs, Indian major brands and even startups showing up. (Word of Advice: Make it a point to turn up for the placement presentations not just for the sake of learning more about the company, but also because many of these have a pleasing snack supplements/lunch following the presentation.) Our college boasts of one of the most well connected Alumni network in the world. Being one of the oldest college in the country, it is very likely that you would come across a Stephanian in a good position in a company or institution of repute, and rest assured- just stating your college is sure to bond you better than anything else. College Alumni has been extremely helpful in funding college (and college society) events , mentoring existing students (via regular talks) and even in bringing internship/placement opportunities to college.

Each block has common washrooms for the residents of that block. The hostel residents are served breakfast, lunch and dinner in the college mess, and although the spread is limited, the quality of the food is reasonably good.

As per the new rules, there will be a section interview every semester for retaining or applying for residence in college, which shall be based on your merit, overall behaviour and contribution to college life. Female students have a curfew timing of 10pm after which their blocks would be locked up. Housing options are available in plenty in the area around college which you can decide on depending on your budget. These include Flats, Pgs and Hostels in neighboring zones. I never had a complaint in this regard. The university area is blessed with a lot of options to eat any kind of food- from big brands to local restaurants, you'll find everything here. There is also a midnight paratha option available for those who stay up late/ or run out of food at night.

Not just in number, but also in quality and content would these events be superior to events you would generally come across. Sports is given its due importance in college with special coaches being called for the training of our teams. We had and have players that have played at the national and even international level. We provide a variety of sports to choose from - Soccer, Basketball, Swimming, Cricket, Badminton, Table Tennis, Shooting are some that I can recollect at the moment. There is also a sports fest where even non-team members can participate in competitions( these are usually inter-departmental competitions). The student body comprises young people belonging to various ethnicities, and everyone accepts each one as their own. The senior students are very welcoming of the freshers from day one, and the faculty members make it a point to ensure that each student gets enough attention to learn and develop properly. Morning Assemblies are held in the college hall for the First Year students, from Monday to Thursday every week, wherein, usually, our Reverent Principle imparts valuable life lessons to the students, and, often, notable ex-Stephenians are invited as guest speakers. The campus thrives with some activity or the other almost every day, thus everyone gets plenty of scope to express and nurture their talents, with the full support of their elders and peers, and learns to develop strong, long-lasting interpersonal bonds. Not just do you get an opportunity to study and enjoy with people from a different background or culture than yours, but you get to interact with one of the smartest best minds from these regions and the world. Tough to Answer. Lets answer it this way, If you're a dull boring anti-social humanity hating nerd - you'll give this a 5. If you're not , you'll give this a 10. There are always some or the other parties happening somewhere. For those who want to enjoy, you'll have the best opportunities available, and those who want to stay focused just on their academics, you'll also find the perfect opportunities to focus and yet get off the steam. For those in between,.....YOLO?! The answer I gave is for unofficial parties. Official parties are more organised and mostly at the end of the academic year.
