ACADEMICS & FACULTY:
  • Routine here at BITS is up to you to the maximum extent. Students have to plan their own time table according to their convenience and teachers available, ofcourse. But the most important and note-worthy thing here is that BITS follows a 0% attendence policy i.e.there is no minimum attendance required to pass a semester. Professors, Lecturers and P.H.D. students take classes at specific times and its the student\'s choice of a teacher and his/her time. On an average there are 25-30 hours of classes a week from 8 a.m. to 4.50 p.m. every day except half day till 1 on saturdays. Assignments, quizzes and tests happen at a regular basis. There are only two major examinations, mid-semester and end-semester comprehensive exams. BITS follows a continuous evaluation scheme. This is without any doubt a great boost to the academic performnce of the students.
  • Teaching system here is quiet thoruogh. Apart from the lectures where more than 100 students sit in one hall there are seperate tutorial classes as well where a small group nearly 40 students are tought the same thing with extra detail and attention. Some P.H.D. students do not have enough knowledge or interest to teach in the tutorial class where it becomes a problem. But not to worry there are surveys at the end of each semester to judge the teacher in every aspect. BITS being a tier-1 engineering college in India with no reservation of seats ,except for board toppers, is in collaboration with world leading universities like M.I.T. and Oxford and follows their course pattern.
  • Overall experience at BITS is life changing. With a ton of co-curricular activities a child\'s personality is developed.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY:
  • In BITS, we are bestowed upon by a lot of freedom. We are allowe to make our own time tables, get the teachers of our choice, etc. Attendance is also not compulsory. So, everything including the projects are opted by us according to our convenience. As fas as the examinations are concerned, the timings are apt. Some quizzes are taken in the tutorial hours and the mid sems happen arround the middle of the sem and the comprehensive exams in the end.
  • The quality and method of teaching varies from one teacher to another. The overall quality and metholody of teaching is decent as all the professors are highly qualified. They use slides in the class in addition to videos they show and books they refer that enable us to get a better grasp of the subject. If any furthur assistance is required, Students generally feel no hesitation to go to the teacher and ask.
  • The overall experience of the college has been outstanding. College has provided me wit clarity about what i want to do with the rest of my life. There are innumerable opportunities that are offered. There is a plethora of activities to chose from and clubs to be a part of- from social work to investing in stock markets. The numbers of couses offered and the degrees given are vast. I believe its upto the students to tap the full benifit out of them. So many chances to explore, meet really talented people from all over the country and learn from them. . There is an opportunity to explore so much, find out what you are good atThe professors are really motivating. Our college was rated as one of the most beautiful campuses in India. The isolation of the location away from the cities helps a lot. There are so many facilities that are provided that make our lives so easy. in the end I would like to mention the fests: That ois the time everyone waits for and it is worth checking out once. I am really proud to be a BITSIAN and hope I make my alma marter proud of me too.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY: Class hours are 8AM to 5PM. Every period goes on in the first 50 minutes of every hour, with a break of 10 minutes between classes. The common courses have two types of classes. One type of class is called the lectures where all the students attend classes in large lecture halls. There are two sections for lecture classes. The second type of class is called the tuts, wherein all the students are grouped under 8-10 different faculties so as to provide individual attention to each student in a smaller group. These sessions are basically meant for exercises, problem solving and taking tests. None of these classes are compulsory to attend. Frequency of tests depend on course to course. Every course have two mid term exams and one comprehensive exam at the end of the term, all of which are compulsory. Other than these, all courses also have quizes- the nos of quizes depend on instructor-in-charge of the course- in which a best-of system is followed. Courses dont have any projetcs associated with them directly. But students always have the option to apply the concepts learned in the courses in a project for display in the annual technical festival or as part of a Study Oriented Project. There are vast number of options available as electives in almost every discipline including finance, management, economics, humanities, linguistics etc.

Other scholarships like NTSE and KVPY are also applicable but only one of them will be accepted.
  • Around 100 - 150 students get scholarships ranging from 10 to 80% of there fee reduction.

FEES AND SCHOLARSHIP:
  • Fee is one of those places where students from middle class families will face trouble. To mention a few there is tuition fees (Rs 1 lac +), mess, laundry, electricity, room cleaning, insurance, cable charge & others which have to be made every semester (not to forget an admission fee of Rs 25,000). Along with thereare occasional expenses like Practice School Fee (Rs 80,000) which have to be paid in alternate years. To add to the list personal expenses like laptop, books & other project requirements. Expenses are not very easy to meet, keeping in mind the fact that fees is increased every year.
  • Students have the opportunity to apply for ‘Merit’ and ‘Merit cum Need’ scholarship for which some minimum grade is required. BITSAA also gives some scholarships but there are only handful of them.
  • Last reliable source left for students is bank loan which usually comes along with a high interest rate.

Placement Statistics 2015 It was announced that within just two days of the placement season, 150 students were placed, with highest domestic offer of 23.5 lakhs. However more sensational news was not forthcoming. The placement brochure did however have a break-down of the percentage of students vs packages. It is a little sad that no other information is felt to be necessary. The amount of money earned is the only metric anyone cares about! Without further ado- Strangely, a single placement brochure is shown for all three. Therefore we assume that this pie-chart corresponds to BITS-Pilani, Pilani campus. • LAN is available in all hostels except the ones which have WiFi.
  • The Messes are big, modern and clean.
  • Library is one of the best in India. Issuing books is automated. Labs are modern and have all essential equipment.

  • Hostels are slightly outdated and are being renovated. Some hostels like Ram Bhavan, CVR Bhavan have been completed and 2 others are under construction. Hotel fees is about 8000 per semester, along with that students have to pay for electricity, room cleaning, laundry, cable charge. Most of the hostels have LAN cables, only few like Ram Bhavan have WiFi facility.
  • As a rule, students are not allowed to stay in PGs outside the campus until unless their parents are accompanying them.
  • Two hostels share one common mess. Mess food is alright, but its not so good that students should be charged Rs.3,500 per month. Also it is compulsory for students staying on campus to take mess food.
  • New Academic Building (NAB) has been constructed recently and is the best place in terms of infrastructure. It accommodates CS, MATH, HUMANITIES, ECONOMICS Departments, along with lecture classes and computer lab (IPC). Rest of the lectures happen in Lecture Theatre Complex (LTC), where each hall has a strength of about 300-500 students. Library is yet another special place in the campus. It has over half a million resources including 3,000 current journals, Over 20,000 electronic resources, including databases, journals and ebooks. In library there are books ranging from engineering to fiction. For convenience of students library has its own computer lab & air conditioned reading room.

INFRASTRUCTURE & TRANSPORTATION: - BITS, Pilani - Pilani campus has 12 boys' hostels with generally around 230 rooms each (most of them are single rooms and rest are double). They are known as Bhawans. Just in case you are interested to know, they are called Ram Bhawan, Budh Bhawan, Krishna Bhawan, Gandhi Bhawan, Shankar Bhawan, Vyas Bhawan, Vishwakarma Bhawan, Bhagirath Bhawan, Rana Pratap Bhawan, Ashok Bhawan, Malviya Bhawan and Malviya extension. Lately, a new boys' hostel has also been set up for the research scholars.- Each Bhawan has its own Resident Warden. There are also Hostel Superintendents who have 3 - 4 hostels each under them.- There is one girls' hostel complex also, called as the Meera Bhawan Complex with a couple of Wardens.- Talking of the boys' hostels, almost 80% of the first year students are allotted double rooms and the rest 20% are given single rooms. This allotment of Bhawans and rooms is completely random, irrespective of disciplines.- However, second year onwards, the students are exclusively allotted single rooms only. The Bhawans are now allotted based on your discipline. You would even have the option of forming a wing with your friends. So, your room (and probably Bhawan also) would change every year.- The hostel buildings are quite old and may not look very attractive. However, the hostels are maintained quite well and are cool and clean.- Two Bhawans generally share a common mess, except in one or two cases where there is an exclusive mess for a Bhawan. The messes have fixed hours of operation for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In my opinion, the mess food is reasonably good. Moreover, mess grubs are also held frequently.- Girls' hostel has its own mess.- In addition to the messes, there are number of eating places on campus. The prominent ones are the Institute Cafeteria (IC), Foodking and the All – Night Canteen (ANC – functional usually till 3 am). Plus, there are a number of good restaurants in Connaught (a sort of a market on campus).- Girls need to be in their hostel by 11 pm whereas no such restriction exists in case of boys.- Boys are not allowed inside girls' hostel and mess and vice versa.Various facilities available in the hostels:- Every room has proper lighting facilities and a fan. Each single room is provided with a bed, a study table, a chair and an almirah. These things double in case of a double room.- Every wing (generally of 12 rooms each) has its own adequate number of bathrooms, washrooms etc.- Every room has a LAN connection (two in the case of double rooms) available at no extra costs. Internet / Intranet facilities can be accessed at reasonable speeds for 24 hours.- Coolers etc. are not allowed in the hostel premises.- Every hostel has two (or more) common rooms (casually called as the TV room and the TT (Table Tennis) room).- Every hostel has got two grounds within the premises (called as QTs) for sports like volleyball and badminton.- Adequate drinking water facilities are available at each floor of every hostel. That's all I can think of right now. I would add if something more comes to my mind. Hopefully, this one would alleviate the to be BITSians (and even their parents) of all their curiosity and more importantly, their anxiety in context of their stay here in hostels at BITS, Pilani – Pilani campus.

  • Life in college is awesome. Our college is brimming with talented people who are dexterous at what they do. Since, attendance is not an issue, some students who really want to pursue their degree further go for classes and the others are stuck in their rooms busy pursuing different things. Most of the people are involved in clubs, departments or assocs and work for them. In the evening, people go out for sports. During the exam time, the library or IPC gets full and becomes conductive for studying. Soon bookworms visit library often and find themselves drowned in books. There is immense exposure and knowledge flowing all over campus through teachers, seniors or the local intranet.  You make really good friends which is like a cherry on the cake. Fests are super fun, the classes are suspended and students from all over the country visit the campus. You learn a lot of things about life, about the world and in general. Its really a wonderful place to be at.

As mentioned above You really learn how to manage your time well with academics and extra curricular activities. The teachers and seniors are so welcoming and caring.
