RBGC, Kolkata was established in July 1961. It is an undergraduate arts college which is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The founders of the college are the Hindusthan Charity trust. It offers an industry-driven Bachelors in Fashion and Apparel Design.

Rani Birla Girls' College Admission is done on the basis of merit lists made according to the higher secondary marks of the candidates. It offers BA, BA [Hons.], B.Sc [Hons.] courses in various subjects. The Rani Birla College provides all-round grooming to the students. The college fest is called 'Amitie'.

Department of English:

It is one of the most popular departments attracting students from all over the state. The department began to offer English as an Honors subject from the year 1962 onwards. The students achieve very good results at the University of Calcutta examinations.

Department of Education:

This interdisciplinary course allows specialization towards management, teaching, research, journalism, etc. The faculty gives special individual attention and encouragement to the students so that they are inspired to be great educators. Education is a popular subject choice amongst students of the Humanities.

Department of Geography:

It organizes regular excursions for students and has a magazine called 'Genesis'. The department began to offer honors degree from the year 2005. The students inculcate the concept of the earth as a physical entity. They learn that its resources are to be used judiciously, turning them into environment-conscious citizens. 

Department of History:

This department is one of the Rani Birla Girls' College's oldest. It offers educational tours and encourages students to present papers. All-round development is facilitated.

Department of Political Science:

The courses offered, study the political system within the sociological framework, both at the macro and micro level. Many ex-students of the Rani Birla Girls' College have become distinguished members of society. The students do well in the university exams.

Department of Sociology:

The curriculum is kept relevant and contemporary and various seminars, field sessions, etc. are conducted. Students enroll to postgraduate studies or diploma courses in related field after their graduation. The honors course began to be offered from the year 2004.

Department of Communicative English:

This department is different from the Dept of English in offering a job-oriented course. The degree of Communicative English (Major) is a three-year Vocational degree under the University of Calcutta. Students are taught according to the trends in the globalized business community.

Department of Journalism And Mass Communication: 

The BA course offered by this department was introduced in 2007 and is a self-financed course. Honors course was offered from 2008.

Department of Bengali:

This department has an impressive collection of Bengali books. It aims to encourage the reading of Bengali literature as not just an academic past time but also a pleasant hobby. The International Language Day is celebrated by the college on the 21st of February every year.

Department of Economics:

This department teaches the contemporary BA course with care so that students are equipped to understand world socio-economic issues. They are encouraged to present papers as well. To prepare students for the university examinations, regular assignments, class tests, tutorials, etc.are assigned. 

Department of Hindi:

This department gives quality education in Hindi and holds several seminars and creative writing sessions. It is one of the oldest departments in the college. It also offers a compulsory MIL paper.

Department of Philosophy:

It develops Logical reasoning skills through classes on Indian and Western logic. Students are encouraged to grasp the ethical and psychological facts of life and differentiate myths or superstitions from reality. It is involved in the psychological counseling offered to the students.

Department of Fashion And Apparel Design:

The department offers industrial training. The course offered by the department includes practical training in garment construction, pattern making, sewing etc.  There is industrial training in places like Madhyamgram, Rajlakshmi Garments, Jangalpur, etc. The course fee for B.FAD is INR 30,000 per annum.

Physical Training:

Students are encouraged to participate in inter non-government college athletic meets and sports like volleyball, badminton, throwball, kabbadi, etc can be played in the college ground. Yoa and Aerobics are promoted.

Rani Birla Girls' College Facilities:

RBGC strives to ensure a comfortable learning environment for its students. It provides psychological counseling to the students in which the philosophy department is involved. RBGC facilities include canteen, medical checkup, sports facilities, IT infrastructure, etc.

Fresh food is provided at the canteen at affordable prices. The college provides for medical checkup performed by a registered medical practitioner and there is also a sick room. Career Counseling has been established with inputs from associated professional organizations like NIIT, Frankfinn, Wigan and Leigh College(I), Scaffold Academy, etc. 

Rani Birla Girl's College IT Academy has been jointly initiated by the college and Webel Informatics Ltd. The Library at Rani Birla well-stocked with books relevant to all offered disciplines. It is undergoing automation. It possesses a seminar library. 

The Grievance Cell at Rani Birla College confidentially redresses all grievances and even takes RTI queries.

The geography department has a laboratory containing all necessary surveying and mapping equipment as well as collections of Topographical Maps of India, Satellite Imageries, and Aerial Photographs. Various audio-visual instruments like television, tape recorder, overhead projector, LCD projector, etc. are available for the benefit of students doing undergraduate courses in Communicative English and Journalism and Mass Communication.
