PMCH was founded in 1874 as Temple Medical School. This college was shifted to Darbhanga in 1925. It is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia and the sixth-oldest medical college in British India. Initially, there were 35 admissions per year, but at present, there are 150 admissions for each batch. This was the first college to start a postgraduate course in 1932 in undivided India. Patna Medical College is affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University. Candidates seeking admission need to apply for NEET UG examinations.

PMCH has the honour of creating and treating many national dignitaries. At present, Patna Medical College administers postgraduate courses for almost all super-specialists.
