About Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Kharagpur:

On Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known as the Indian Institute of Technology(Kharagpur) Act declaring this Institute as an Institute of national importance. The Institute was also given the status of an autonomous University. From this modest start in 1950, IIT Kharagpur has been engaged in a steady process of development with about 18 academic departments, five centres of excellence. the vast tree-laden campus, spreading over 2100 acres has a self contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants. Currently we have about 550 faculty, 1700 employees and 9000 students on the campus.

Situated about 120 km west of Kolkata, Kharagpur can be reached in about 2 hours by train from Howrah railway station of Kolkata or 3 hours by car from Kolkata Airport. Kharagpur is also connected by direct train services to most major cities of the country. The Institute is about 10 minutes drive (5 km) from the Kharagpur railway station. Private taxi, autorickshaw or cycle-rickshaw can be hired to reach the Institute.

Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduates:

  • Candidates should be among the top 2,20,000 (including all categories) by scoring positive marks in Paper-1 of JEE (Main) 2017.
  • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1992. Five years relaxation is given to SC, ST and PwD candidates, i.e., these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1987.
  • A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in consecutive years. Therefore, candidates who appeared in JEE (Advanced) 2016 for the first time are also eligible.
  • A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2016 or 2017. However, candidates whose Class XII (or equivalent) examination results for the academic year 2014-15 were declared after June 2015 are eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2017.
  • A candidate should NOT have been admitted in an IIT irrespective of whether or not he/she continued in the program) OR accepted the IIT seat by reporting at a reporting center in the past. The candidates whose admission at IITs was canceled are also NOT eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2017.'

Eligibility Criteria for Postgraduates:

  • have a B.Tech or degree.
  • have at least 55% aggregate marks, without rounding off.
  • There is a relaxation of 5% for reserved category candidates.

Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D.:

  • should have a degree in one of the following B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology), M.Sc. (Master of Science) MBA (after BA/B.Sc/B.Com), MA (Master of Arts) B.Arch. (Bachelor of Architecture), B.Sc (Engg.), PG Diploma in Management of 2-year duration (after BA/B.Sc/B.Com), MBBS degree with compulsory one-year internship completed 
  • 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying examination in Engineering/Science/Commerce/ Management or
  • 55% in Humanities or Social Sciences (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale).
  • Candidates for award of Institute Research Assistantship will have to possess a valid GATE score that is above the cutoff level. Candidates who have merely qualified in NET examination but have not got a fellowship will not qualify for Institute Research Assistantship.

Admission Procedure:

Admission Procedure for Undergraduates:

  • Admission to undergraduate programmes in all IITs is tied to the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE)
  • Counseling is done for admission of students into the Bachelors course.

Admission Procedure for Postgraduates:

  • Candidates are offered seats in chosen specializations based on candidate’s score (GATE only or GATE + Interview).
  • A candidate can Accept or Reject the offer.
  • If a candidate rejects the offer, then his/her name will be deleted from JMP 2016 list and he/she will no longer be considered for admission in JMP 2016.
  • Depending upon the offer made and choice, a candidate who wishes to accept the offer may have the option of Accepting the offer, if it happens to be his/her highest choice or Accepting with Upgradation if the offer received is not his/her highest choice.
  • All such candidates who wish to accept the offer (with or without up gradation) have to log into JMP Admission portal via, and make necessary fee payment before choosing the options available- Accept or Accept with Upgradation
  • Final selection will be based on interview results.

Admission Procedure for Ph.D.:

  • A candidate who has obtained research scholarship on the basis of NET fellowship examination will be evaluated on the basis of career and interview only
  • Foreign nationals possessing the requisite qualifications and sponsored by the Govt. of India (ICCR, HRD etc.) with Scholarship are admitted on the basis of grades or marks obtained in the qualifying examination. A minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 (out of 10) at the qualifying examination is required in such cases.

  • The most unique thing about IIT KGP is illumination. Every year we celebrate Diwali in a unique way which we call illumination.

  • We have classes from Monday to Friday on each day. Breaks are given in between the classes.
  • Projects are given in the final year of M.Sc. and with the help of a group and our professors It's not a tough task to complete that. There are four exams in a year.
  • Assignments are regularly given to us which has to be submitted.
  • There are enough professors and each one with their own style. They do justice with their teaching. They focus on sharpening our concepts.
  • Overall, it is a good environment, If one wishes to study, Then IIT Kharagpur is a good choice.
  • There are a lot of societies for students, like dance, drama, music, Adventure, sports, robotics, art,etc. They are run by students only. and as being the oldest among all IITs institutes, everything is developed here.
  • Diwali is the heart of all the festivals In IIT, Other than that spring Fest and Kshitij are the other main fests, there are much more small events are conducted.
  • Talking about the life in college life in general, It's actually awesome. Living an IITian life is above imaginations, you get everything here.

  • There are classes from 8am in the morning to 6pm in the evening, but these timings includes every elective slot. There will be electives you would't take. So there will be free time in between.
  • The professors are all fully qualified and have a lot of knowledge and if you want to gain knowledge they will be more than happy to help. Most professors teach with the help of presentations which they normally forward to the students later. 
  • There are numerous clubs for every type of student with respect to what they love.
  • There are festivals like Spring Fests and Kshitij. They are big affairs.

Classes go on from 7:30 am in the morning to 5:30 pm in the evening. Labs are fully furnished with the best of equipments available.Tests and assignments are given so as to check the overall improvement of each and every student. Library is open from 8:00 am in the morning to 12:00 am in the night making sure it is accessible to students. The Central Library of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, is the largest technical library of Asia having books, journals, and even has digital Library. Courses offered in the first and second year are core courses, while electives are allowed in the third, fourth and fifth years. Professors and very friendly and can be approached when needed.
