Reviews About Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Delhi

Kapil B.Tech (Chemical), batch of 2018
18 Oct 2016 Rating :
ACADEMICS & FACULTY:
  • Classes start early at 8am to 12pm, with lectures of 50min or 1hr 20 min long. Afternoons are meant for labs and tutorials. Project and assignments are very strong part of the curriculum. Projects are generally required to be submitted at the end of the semester, whereas assignments are generally weekly submitted. There are two minors and one major exam in a semester.  the weight of minors is lesser than the major.
  • The quality of the teaching is quite relative. Some students say that it is very good while some will differ. However, I feel apart from one or two professors, almost all professors are very efficient in their work. Teaching is done by both modern and orthodox methods. Some courses are taught using slides on projectors and those slides are regularly uploaded on moodle. These are those courses which are taught to a larger number of students. Some courses are taught on board. There are no slides uploaded for such courses, hence making notes becomes necessary.
  • My overall experience in the college is very good. I have a very good friend circle with some of the best minds in the country. It makes you work hard. Extracurricular activities are very well promoted.  I have been the part of the institute cricket team. IIT-D also provides an opportunity to study one semester outside of India. I have been to France for one semester and it was a life-changing experience. Four years in IIT makes you more confident, intelligent, hard working and street smart.
CLUBS & ASSOCIATIONS:
  • There are many students associations. BSW (Board for Student Welfare), BRCA (Board for Recreational and Cultural Activities), BSA (Board for Sports Activities), BHM (Board for Hostel Management). Then we have clubs like dance clubs, drama club, quizzing club, debating club etc. All these are fully maintained by students only.
  • IIT-D organizes various fests like Rendezvous which is one of the most famous youth cultural fest of India. Tech and sports fest are held together. IIT-D invites a lot of guest speakers on the occasion. A lot of students from all over the country comes to take part in the fests.
  • Life in IIT-D is very chill.  People enjoy what they do. You can do whatever you want, nobody bothers you. There are movie and TV series clubs where people assemble and discuss upcoming theories about their favorite TV shows. In hostels, students play Counter Strike and DOTA in groups. Exam time they become quite serious. Library becomes crowded with students and after the exams are over, you will find many of the students in SDA Market,Hauz Khas Village and Connaught Place chilling out.

ACADEMICS & FACULTY:

classes are held regularly and also the quizes, viva, assignments are taken in the frequent manner. The choice and the relevance of the available courses is poor.like I want to persue my career in computer science but the cgpa factor always comes in my path.

Quality of teaching is very good and most of the professors are very cooperative professors are available even outside the classroom but we have to take appointment to meet them.

Sumit B.Tech, batch of 2012
17 Nov 2015 Rating :
ACADEMICS & FACULTY:
  • The academics at IIT Delhi are excellent to say the least. The sole problem of engineering education in India is the lack of properly equipped labs, which results in the lack of practical knowledge and abundance of theoretical knowledge. This problem is somewhat encountered by IIT Delhi. There are well equipped labs dealing with different areas of all engineering branches. Not only engineering, basic sciences labs like physics and chemistry are no different. Another standout feature is the flexibility in curriculum. The courses that we have to do are not fixed, and we can choose from a variety of courses according to our interests.
CLUBS & ASSOCIATIONS:
  • I am residing in a Hostel provided by college which are in pathetic conditions both infrastructure wise and food wise. You cannot change your hostel, once a hostel is allocated you have to stay there and there are many restrictions as well in the hostels

About Indian Institute of Technology, [IIT] Delhi

History of Indian Institute of Technology:

The concept of the IITs was first introduced in a report in the year 1945 by Sh. N.M.Sircar, then a member of Education on Viceroy's Executive Council. Following his recommendations, the first Indian Institute of Technology was established in the year 1950 in Kharagpur. In his report, Shri Sircar had suggested that such Institutes should also be started in different parts of the country. The Government having accepted these recommendations of the Sircar Committee decided to establish more Institutes of Technology with the assistance of friendly countries who were prepared to help. The first offer of help came from USSR who agreed to collaborate in the establishment of an Institute through UNESCO at Bombay. This was followed by the Institutes of Technology at Madras, Kanpur, and Delhi with collaborations with West Germany, USA, and the UK respectively. Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati was established in 1995 and the University of Roorkee was converted into an IIT in 2001.

The Government of India negotiated with the British Government for collaboration in setting up an Institute of Technology at Delhi. The British Government agreed in principle to such a collaboration but were inclined initially to start in a modest way. It was therefore agreed that a College of Engineering & Technology should be established at Delhi with their assistance. A trust called the Delhi Engineering College Trust was established with the help of the UK Government and the Federation of British Industries in London. Later H.R.H. Prince Philips, Duke of Edinburgh, during his visit to India, laid the foundation stone of the College at Hauz Khas on January 28, 1959

The College of Engineering & Technology was registered as a Society on 14th June 1960 under the Societies Registration Act No. XXI of 1860 (Registration No.S1663 of 1960-61). The first admissions were made in 1961. The students were asked to report at the College on 16th August 1961 and the College was formally inaugurated on 17th of August 1961 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Minister of Scientific Research & Cultural Affairs. The College was affiliated to the University of Delhi.
